WATERBURY, Conn. – In his first collegiate start, sophomore
Andrew Harris (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched a seven-hit shutout to help the Post University baseball team to a split with Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Caldwell on Tuesday at Municipal Stadium. The Eagles dropped the first game 5-4 and used a pair of first inning runs to take the nightcap 2-0.
Harris got the Cougars in order in the third inning of game two and closed each of the first and sixth innings with strikeouts. Offensively, junior
Alexandre Beland (Trios-Rivere, Quebec) went 4-for-8 in the twinbill with two RBIs, while classmate
Todd Blair (Ajax, Ontario) totaled three hits in six at bats with an RBI and a run scored.
Game One: Caldwell 5, Post 4
Post (14-26, 6-12 CACC) grabbed a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by Blair, which plated Beland. Beland reached on a one-out double to left field and scored from second on Blair's base hit.
After Caldwell (12-25, 9-9 CACC) leveled the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, Post reclaimed a one-run lead with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Junior
Joe Diz (Albuquerque, N.M.) led off with a single and stole second. Beland drove a one-out single to left field to plate Diz from second. Junior
Alex Villar (Mesa, Ariz.) singled and Blair was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior
Russell Sirko (Danbury, Conn.) plated the second run of the inning, Beland, when Sirko drew a walk with the bases loaded. The Eagles held a 3-1 advantage after four innings.
The Cougars cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by Jorge Ynoa, but junior
Bobby Rodriguez (Carmel, N.Y.) pushed the Post lead back to two runs, 4-2, when he scored from third on a Beland single in the bottom of the sixth. Rodriguez advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third to put himself into position to score.
However, Caldwell scored three times on three walks and two hit batsmen in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead.
Sophomore
Sean Sylvester (Berlin, Conn.) fell to 1-3 and suffered the loss on the mound for Post. Junior
Kevin Collinge (Chandler, Ariz.) tossed 7.1 innings in the start. Collinge allowed four hits, three runs, two of which were earned. He struck out six batters.
Game Two: Post 2, Caldwell 0
Rodriguez and Blair scored on separate wild pitches in the top of the first to account for all the scoring in the nightcap. After Rodriguez led the game off with a single to left field, he advanced to third on a single by Beland one batter later.
Blair drew a two-out walk and stole second and third. He scored on a wild pitch during sophomore
Jeff St. Pierre's (Milford, Conn.) at bat.
That was all the help Harris would need as he threw a complete game in his first collegiate start. Harris only allowed the leadoff batter on base twice in the game.
