SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Post University softball team was swept in its final road games of the 2012 season, after it lost a doubleheader at American International on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles suffered a 5-2 setback in the opener, before they fell in game two 6-1 at Groff Field.
Sophomores
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) each had two hits on the day. Udris added a run, while DeMartino had a RBI. Junior
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) had her 15 game hit streak snapped in game two.
Game One: AIC 5, Post 2
Post used a pair of doubles in the top of the first to grab an early 1-0 lead. After May led the game off with a double to right center, she scored on a two-out double to center field by DeMartino. However, American International scored five unanswered runs from the second through fifth innings to claim a 5-1 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets got run-scoring extra base hits from Sarah Calgreen, Haley Marchand and Katie Merrill. Calgreen and Merrill used doubles to the either gap in the outfield, while Marchand tripled to right center in the fifth.
In the top of the seventh, senior
Samantha Pagano (Marlboro, N.Y.) drove in Udris on a fielder's choice to pull the Eagles to within three, 5-2.
Sophomore
Alysha Pieta (Middletown, Conn.) suffered her third loss of the season for Post, while
Game Two: AIC 6, Post 1
American International (17-23) scored three times in the first, and plated the first five runs of the game. In the first, Marchand drove a double to centerfield that scored two runs, while Stephanie Belanger plated the third run of the frame with a single up the middle. Belanger had five RBIs in the game.
Post (14-30) got its lone run of the day from junior
Christina Marino (Mahopac, N.Y.). Marino scored on a single to right center field by sophomore
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.)
The Eagles will conclude the regular season on Friday, April 20, at LaMoy Field. Post will host Chestnut Hill in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m. Following the twinbill, the Post University Athletics Department will honor the four members of the senior class with a special ceremony.
