Bentson Homers Twice In Split At Wilmington

NEW CASTLE, Del. – Senior Kim Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) hit her first two home runs of the season as the Post University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Wilmington on Saturday afternoon. Junior Lianna May (Kings Ferry, N.Y.) extended her hitting streak to 12 games with two hits in the twin bill.
 
Bentson had three hits on the day and hit her first two home runs of the season. She had four RBIs and scored three runs. Sophomores Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) each had three hits. Sclafani also scored twice and drove in one run.
 
Game 1 – Post 6, Wilmington 4
The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Brooke Berger singled and Christin Headley drew a walk to put two on with one out. Jillian Stafford cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left center. The Eagles answered back with two runs in the third. Senior Amy Mantha (Agawam, Mass.) singled and was driven in by a two-run home run by Bentson.
 
Post tied the game in the top of the fourth. Senior Cassidie Ern (Hope Valley, R.I.) led off with a single. Senior Samantha Pagano (Marlboro, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice as Ern was forced out at second base. May singled and advanced to third as the ball was misplayed by the right fielder. Pagano came home to tie the game at 3-3.
 
Two errors allowed Bentson and sophomore Christina Udris (Leavittown, Pa.) to reach in the top of the fifth. Ern loaded the bases with a single to left field. Pagano singled to right to give Post its first lead of the afternoon. The Eagles added another run on a throwing error by the Wildcats catcher allowing Ern to come home and put Post ahead 5-3.
 
A leadoff single followed by a walk put two Wildcats on with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth. Stafford grounded out, but moved the runners to second and third. Rachel Painter hit a sacrifice fly to left field to narrow the Eagles lead to 5-4. Sclafani scored an insurance run for Post in the top of the sixth on a fielder's choice by Ern. Junior Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) pitched around a leadoff walk in the seventh inning to give the Eagles the victory.

Game 2 – Wilmington 6, Post 4
Wilmington got on the board early as Headley and Stafford hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first to bring home a run. Amanda Crockett hit an RBI single to left field in the second inning to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage.
 
May singled to leadoff the third inning followed by a Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) walk to put two on with nobody out. Bonamassa advanced to second as May was caught stealing third base. Sclafani doubled to deep center field, driving in Bonamassa and cutting the deficit to 2-1. She advanced to third on a passed ball, but was stranded there.
 
The Wildcats broke the game open in the third inning as they scored four runs on four hits. Berger led off with a triple to right field and came home to score on a single by Headley. A hit by Painter and walk by Kristin Garvin loaded the bases with one out. Kinsley Parker cleared the bases with a double to right field, giving Wilmington a 6-1 lead.
 
Bentson launched her second two-run home run of the afternoon to left center in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 6-3. Bonamassa and Sclafani reached with one out in the top of the seventh. DeMartino singled to centerfield, but Bonamassa was thrown out on her way to third. With two outs and runners on first and second, Mantha cut the Wildcats lead to 6-4 on a hit up the middle. Bentson flew out to left center to end the threat.
 
The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, April 15 for a doubleheader at Bloomfield. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. It will be Post's final CACC road contest of the season.
