WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University baseball team held on for an 8-7 win in the second game of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader and salvage a split with the University of the Sciences on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. The Eagles lost the opener 3-2 in 11 innings. Senior
James Wong (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished 4-for-9 on the day with a home run and five RBIs.
Wong tallied two hits in each game, and drove in four of Post's first six runs in game two. He hit a three-run home run in the second inning of the nightcap to get the Eagles on the board. Senior
Stephen Corbett (Prospect, Conn.) earned the complete game victory in the finale. He finished with 11 strikeouts.
Game One: USciences 3, Post 2 – 11 Innings
An RBI single to left center by Will Rebman plated Kyle Davis from second in the top of the 11
th to give the University of the Sciences a 3-2 lead with one out. Davis got into scoring position after a wild pitch by junior
John Jeanes (Hatchechubbee, Ala.).
Sophomore
Jeff St. Pierre (Milford, Conn.) reached in the bottom of the 11
th on a fielding error by the first baseman; however, junior
Bobby Rodriguez (Carmel, N.Y.) grounded out to end the game.
After a sacrifice fly by Lou Tomasetti gave the Devils a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Eagles tied the score on an RBI single by junior
Alex Villar (Mesa, Ariz.) which plated classmate
Alexandre Beland (Trios-Rivere, Quebec).
Nick Szalejko gave USciences a 2-1 lead after Connor Lennox led the top of the seventh off with a walk. Lennox moved to second on a bunt base hit by Mike Gartland, while he moved to third on a ground out by Ronnie Petito.
Wong tied the score at 2-2 win a run-scoring single to center field that drove in Villar.
Post starter
Cutler Ruby (Diboll, Texas) pitched seven innings and scattered four hits. He struck out three. Jeanes fell to 2-4 with the loss.
Game Two: Post 8, USciences 7
Junior
Joe Diz (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Villar. After Diz reached on an error by the third baseman, sophomore
Kevin Fearon (Williston Park, N.Y.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Diz to second. He stole third, and scored on Villar's single to center field.
After the Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, Post got on the board with Wong's first home run of the season. A three-run shot, Wong sent the ball over the left field fence. Junior
Todd Blair (Ajax, Ontario) reached on a walk, while senior
Russell Sirko (Danbury, Conn.) was hit by a pitch.
The Eagles increased their lead to 6-2 in the third. After the first three batters of the inning reached on a pair of walks and an error by the shortstop to load the bases, Blair plated Rodriguez on a groundout to second base. Villar and freshman
Taylor Carr (St. Thomas, Ontario) advanced to third and second respectively on the play. After Sirko reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for the second time in the frame, St. Pierre hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Villar. Wong capped the inning with an RBI single to center field, and plated Carr.
A four-run fifth for the University of the Sciences tied the score at 6-6. A two-RBI double by Dennis Murphy and a single by Kyle Davis which scored a pair of runs keyed the inning for the Devils.
Post grabbed a one-run lead on an RBI single by St. Pierre, which capped a stretch of three consecutive two-out base hits for the Eagles. Blair scored the run for the Eagles.
The Eagles will conclude a six-game homestand on Monday, April 16, when they host UMass-Lowell in a non-conference game at Municipal Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
