LOWELL, Mass. – The Post University softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader by UMass-Lowell on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles dropped game one 9-2, and the nightcap 8-5 at River View Field. In game one, junior
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) tallied her team-best 14
th multiple-hit game of the season with a 2-for-4 performance.
Additionally, with her 1-for-4 game in the second matchup, May has hit safely in eight straight contests, while senior
Kim Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) and sophomore
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) have recorded hits in each of the last seven games. May's eight-game streak is the longest by any Post player this season.
Game One: UMass-Lowell 9, Post 2
UMass-Lowell scored three times in the bottom of the first to grab the lead. A sacrifice fly by Elyssa Boris and a two-RBI double to left field by Brianna Mahoney keyed the River Hawks inning. Ariana Darcy hit a solo home run in the second to increase the UMass-Lowell lead to 4-0.
Post (10-26) got on the board in the fourth and cut the deficit to 4-2. A one-out infield hit by sophomore DeMartino, and a double down the right field line by Bentson put runners on second and third. Sophomore
Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) plated DeMartino on a sacrifice fly to center, while a single to left field by senior
Cassidie Ern (Hope Valley, R.I.) drove in Bentson.
UMass-Lowell (28-9) responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-2 lead. Darcy laced a triple to center field to help her 4-for-4 game with three runs and three RBIs.
Junior
Johanna Rice (Glendale, N.Y.) fell to 4-12 with the loss for the Eagles, while Courtney Lanfranchi earned her 11
th win of the season for the River Hawks.
Game Two: UMass Lowell 8, Post 5
The River Hawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the third and grabbed a 4-0 lead. Back-to-back RBI hits by Boris and Lindsi Panarelli produced three runs. Panarelli used a one-out double down the left field line to score a pair.
However, the Eagles responded and tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the fourth. Four straight Post players reached with one out as Ern produced a RBI single through the left side to plate DeMartino with the bases loaded. Ern was eliminated on a fielder's choice during
Christina Udris' (Levittown, Pa.) at bat. Udris drove in Erb to produce the Eagles' second run of the inning. The last two runs scored when senior
Samantha Pagano (Marlboro, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and a RBI single by senior
Amy Mantha (Agawam, Mass.).
UMass-Lowell took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when a double to left field by Meagan Guy scored Ashley Daniels.
With the Eagles trailing 8-4 in the top of the seventh, Erb led off with a home run to pull the visitors within three, but the rally fell short.
Post will travel to Caldwell College for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Wednesday, April 11. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 3 p.m.
