CLERMONT, Fla. – The Post University softball team dropped third and fourth straight games after it was swept by Assumption in a doubleheader at the National Training Center (NTC) Spring Games on Wednesday. The Eagles dropped game one 11-5, and game two 1-0 in a pitcher's duel.
Senior catcher
Amy Mantha (Agawam, Mass.) and junior
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) hit their first home run of the season each in game one, both of which were two-run shots. Mantha went 3-for-5 at the plate and had two RBIs. Sophomore
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had her four-game hitting streak snapped in game two.
Game One: Assumption 11, Post 5
After Assumption took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a two-run scoring triple by Jess DiPilato, the Eagles responded in their half of the frame. Sophomore
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) drew a one out walk, and the next batter, May, cleared the bases with a home run to even the score at 2-2.
The Greyhounds plated four runs in the sixth to gain a 6-2 advantage. After a double and a sacrifice bunt put DiPilato on third base, Nikki Boris hit an RBI single that drove in DiPilato. Assumption final three runs of the frame were unearned as the result of two defensive miscues by the Eagles' infield.
With Sclafani on first with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Mantha hit a two-run home run to pull Post within two runs, 6-4. After a double by senior
Kim Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.), she came around to score on a base hit by junior
Christina Marino (Mahopac, N.Y.). Bentson's run pulled made the score 6-5 in favor of Assumption.
However, in the top of the seventh, the Greyhounds plated five runs to take an 11-5 lead.
Junior pitcher
Johanna Rice (Glendale, N.Y.) suffered her third straight loss to start the season. She allowed seven hits and struck out five. Assumption's Jennifer Lowrey earned the win.
Game Two: Assumption 1, Post 0
Lauren Medeiros scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the second after she got on base with a leadoff triple.
The Eagles got runners in scoring position in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings, powered by eight hits in the game. In the seventh, back-to-back one out singles by
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Cassidie Ern (Hope Valley, R.I.) put runners on first and second. However, the next two batters made outs to end the game.
Junior
Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) fell to 1-4 overall, despite scattering just three hits. She struck out four batters in game two.
Post (1-7) will wrap up play at the NTC Spring Games on Thursday, March 8, when it takes on Saint Joseph's College and Southern New Hampshire. First pitches are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
