STRATFORD, Conn. – The Post University softball team used a seven-run fifth inning, and scored five times before it recorded an out as the Eagles earned a split a doubleheader against in-state rival Bridgeport in non-conference competition at DeLuca Field on Monday. After Post lost the first game 4-3, it snapped seven-game losing streak with a 9-1 win in the nightcap in five innings.
Senior
Cassidie Ern (Hope Valley, R.I.) tallied three runs and three RBIs on the day, including a pair of runs and RBIs in game two. Sophomore
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) notched her second multi-hit game of the season in the nightcap. Junior
Christina Marino (Mahopac, N.Y.) cleared the bases in game two with a two-out pinch-hit triple that plated three runs.
Game One: Bridgeport 4, Post 3
The Purple Knights drew first blood as the bottom half of the order notched four straight base hits in the bottom of the second. Run scoring singles were provided by Mallory Streat and Sydney Phillips. An RBI double by Jessica Griesinger capped the three-run inning by Bridgeport.
Bridgeport tacked on an insurance run to take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Katelyn Wall which plated Griesinger.
Post attempted to rally in the top of the sixth. Udris and Ern started the inning with consecutive extra base hits. Udris led off the frame with a double down the right field line and she came around to score on a triple to right centerfield by Ern.
After a sacrifice fly by senior
Samantha Pagano (Marlboro, N.Y.) plated Ern to make the score 4-2, sophomore
Brandi Davis (Magnolia, Del.), singled and came around to score after a trio of defensive miscues by Bridgeport.
However, the Eagles went down in order in the top of the seventh to help Bridgeport to its third straight win. Junior
Johanna Rice (Glendale, N.Y.) fell to 3-9 with the loss and allowed seven hits and two walks. She struck out four batters.
Game Two: Post 9, Bridgeport 1 – 5 innings
With the Eagles ahead 2-1 in the top of the fifth, Post (6-18) scored seven times. Sophomore
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the inning off with a walk. After she advanced to second on a single by Udris, both runs scored on a double to right field by Ern, her second extra base hit of the day.
With Ern on second base, senior
Kim Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and, classmate
Amy Mantha (Agawam, Mass.) singled to right centerfield to load the bases. After a Bridgeport (8-11) pitching change, sophomore
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield and plated Ern, who tagged up on the play.
One batter later, sophomore
Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the second time in the inning. Pagano hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Bentson to grow the Post lead to 6-1.
After a
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.) loaded the bases, Marino stepped in as a pinch hitter and drove a triple to right field to clear the bases and make the score 9-1 in favor of the Eagles.
Junior
Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) retired the Purple Knights in order in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. She struck out seven batters, including all three outs in the fourth. Cummings is 3-7 this season.
Bridgeport jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Post leveled the score at 1-1 in the top of the second when Sclafani hit her first of two sacrifice flies of the day and drove in Ern. The Eagles took the lead for good after an RBI single to centerfield by Pagano drove in Mantha, who walked to reach base.
Post will return to LaMoy Field on Tuesday, March 27, when it hosts Nyack in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
