WATERBURY, Conn. – Despite a 3-1 lead through five innings in game two, the Post University softball lost a pair of games to Mercy in non-conference action at LaMoy Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles dropped the series opener 7-2, before the Mavericks stole game two, 4-3.
Sophomore
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and a walk. Classmate
Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.) had Post's lone extra base hit, an RBI double in game two.
Game One: Mercy 7, Post 2
With Mercy (10-7) leading 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles scored twice to cut the deficit to 3-2. Sclafani drew a walk with the bases loaded and drove in senior
Samantha Pagano (Marlboro, N.Y.). Sophomore
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.) plated senior
Amy Mantha (Agawam, Mass.) on a fielder's choice.
However, the Mavericks tallied four runs in the top of the seventh to push the lead to five runs, 7-2. The inning was keyed by a two-RBI double by Lexi Majury.
In the bottom of the seventh, Post (5-13) was retired in order on three foul pop ups.
Sophomore
Alysha Pieta (Middletown, Conn.) suffered the loss in the circle for the Eagles and stands at 0-2 this season. She started the game and pitched 2.1 innings and allowed three runs, two of which were earned. Pieta recorded one strikeout.
Game Two: Mercy 4, Post 3
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. After Udris reached on a fielding error, senior
Kim Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.) singled through the left side to put two on with one out. During
Cassidie Ern's (Hope Valley, R.I.) at bat the runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Ern, who reached on a fielder's choice, drove in Udris, who beat a throw to the plate from the shortstop. One batter later, Erb hit a ground-rule double to drive in Bentson and put Ern on third base.
Ern scored the Eagles' third run of the frame on a throwing error by the catcher.
After Mercy scored a run in the fifth on an RBI double by Jenna Ausiello, the Mavericks tallied three runs in the sixth to take the lead for good. Natalie Wabshinak drove in two runs and scored on a single with two Post errors on the same play.
Junior
Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) fell to 2-5 with the loss. She pitched a complete game. Conversely, Alexandra Puglisi earned both wins for Mercy.
The Eagles will take on Dominican in a battle of unbeaten Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) teams on Friday at LaMoy Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
