BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – For the first time in program history, the Post University softball team is 4-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play. On Wednesday, the Eagles swept the Concordia Clippers and scored six runs in the final three innings of the twinbill. Junior
Johanna Rice (Glendale, N.Y.) earned both wins in the circle and has notched victories in her last three appearances.
After Rice earned a complete game win in the opener, she came out of the bullpen in game two and pitched the final five innings to earn her third win of the season. Rice allowed three runs and six hits as she recorded the final 15 outs in the night cap.
Offensively, four Eagles tallied three hits including sophomore
Casey Sclafani (Brooklyn, N.Y.), senior
Kim Bentson (Brewster, N.Y.), sophomore
Christina Udris (Levittown, Pa.), and junior
Lianna May (King Ferry, N.Y.). Sclafani had a team-high three RBIs on the day, all of which came in game two, while Bentson, Udris and May scored two runs apiece.
Game One: Post 3, Concordia 2 – F/8
With her only hit in the contest, May drove in Udris to take a 3-2 lead and eventually win the first game of the twinbill. Udris drove a leadoff double to right field. After she advanced to third on a one-out single by senior
Cassidie Ern (Hope Valley, R.I.), May plated Udris on an infield single.
Rice set the Clippers down in order in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the win for Post. She earned her second win in as many starts, and improved to 2-6 this season. She scattered five hits and struck out three batters.
Concordia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Maria DeMartino walked and came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Nicole Spadaro.
The Eagles took their first lead of the day in the top of the fourth after they scored two runs in the frame. Sophomore
Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled and scored on an RBI single by Udris. Additionally, Udris scored her first of two runs in the game on an RBI by senior
Samantha Pagano (Marlboro, N.Y.).
The Clippers evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Alexandra Mandarano scored after Kristina Patrocinio's at bat.
Game Two: Post 7, Concordia 6
Trailing 6-5 in the top of the seventh, the Eagles scored twice in its last chance to steal a 7-6 win in game two and sweep the conference doubleheader from the Clippers. After sophomore
Alysha Pieta (Middletown, Conn.) scored the game-tying run on an RBI single by Bentson, Pagano plated Bentson, and what proved to be the game-winning run on an infield single to the shortstop.
Rice retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the Eagles fourth straight win.
Post (5-11, 4-0 CACC) scored six runs in the final three innings to steal the second game of the doubleheader and to sweep Concordia. With the Eagles trailing 3-1 in the top of the fifth, Sclafani drove a two-out double into the gap in right center field to drive in May and sophomore
Jackie Bonamassa (Staten Island, N.Y.) who both started the play in scoring position.
After Concordia (6-7, 3-3 CACC) plated two runs to claim a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth, Bentson scored on a single by May and Ern was driven in on a fielder's choice by Bonamassa.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, March 21, at LaMoy Field. Post will host Mercy in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
