WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University baseball team opened up its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) home schedule on Saturday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader against Chestnut Hill. The Eagles won game one in walk-off fashion, 2-1 in 12 innings. Chestnut Hill defeated Post 7-6 in game two.
Joe Diz (Albuquerque, N.M) had five hits on the day and drove in two runs. He also stole one base.
Todd Blair (Ajax, Ontario) had two runs batted in. Alexandre Beland (Trois-Rivere, Quebec) threw out three base runners on the afternoon.
Game One – Post 2, Chestnut Hill 1, F/12:
The Griffins got on the board in the first inning of game one as Ray Puskar grounded out to second base and Alex Latchum came into score. Post tied the game up in the third inning when junior
Alex Villar (Mesa, Ariz.) drove in Diz with a single to shallow center field. Diz led off the third with an infield single.
Chestnut Hill threatened in the top of the ninth with two straight singles after a leadoff groundout. A fielder's choice by Desmond Lites moved the runner to third with two outs.
Cutler Ruby (Diboll, Texas) caught Timothy DiMonte looking to end the inning. The Eagles went down in order in the ninth.
In the top of the 12
th inning, Lites led off with an infield single. He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt.
Andrew Harris (Huntington Beach, Calif.) struck out the next two batters to end the inning. After a single by Beland,
Bobby Rodriguez (Carmel, N.Y) reached on an error by the Griffin first baseman. Diz lined a single right over the glove of the diving second baseman to drive in Beland for the winning run.
Game Two – Chestnut Hill 7, Post 6
Chestnut Hill took a first inning lead in game two after an Eagles throwing error led to a run. Post answered back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of its own. Wong singled, than advanced to second on an error. Blair doubled to left field to drive in Wong. Beland hit a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage after two.
The Griffins scored five runs in the third inning to pull ahead 6-2. Back-to-back singles started it off and a throwing error by Beland allowed the first run in. Chestnut Hill had three more hits in the frame before a groundout to first base ended the inning.
Stephen Corbett (Prospect, Conn.) settled down as he sat the Griffins down in order in the next two innings. Chestnut Hill added another run in the sixth inning to extend the advantage to 7-2.
A double by Wong after Diz walked to open the seventh gave the Eagles two runners in scoring position with no outs. Blair grounded out, but Diz came home to score. Carr singled to left, driving in Wong to make the score 7-4. The Eagles added two more in the eighth on hits by
Bobby Rodriguez and Diz to pull within a run at 7-6.
The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the ninth but fell short. Carr doubled to deep left field.
Russell Sirko (Danbury, Conn.) walked and Post had two on with two outs. A groundout by
Erik Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) ended the comeback.
Post will be back in action on Tuesday, March 20, as they travel to Bloomfield for a CACC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
