PREVIEW: #25 Post Opens CACC Tournament On Wednesday Against Caldwell At LaMoy Field

One-Touch Passes:

The top-seeded Post University men's soccer team will begin its journey for its second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tournament championship when the Eagles host eight-seeded Caldwell in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children, senior citizens and students with valid ID.
 
On Friday, Post completed an unbeaten CACC regular season with a record of 8-0-3, and recorded a team-best 12 wins during the regular season. The Eagles defeated Nyack 3-0 at LaMoy Field to capture the squad's second straight CACC Regular Season Title.
 
Caldwell played its way into the conference tournament after a 2-1 win over Dominican on Saturday. The Cougars got out to a 2-0 lead, before Dominican pulled within one in the final minute.
 
Post is 2-0 in postseason play against Caldwell, including a 2-0 quarterfinal win over the Cougars in 2011, and a semifinal triumph in 2008.
 
Notes:
Last Time Out: #25 Post 3, Nyack 0
#25 Post finished the 2012 CACC regular season undefeated after it notched a 3-0 win over Nyack at LaMoy Field Friday afternoon. Freshman Francisco Sastre netted two goals and junior Joe Baccielo added a goal and two assists. Senior Errol Reid made two saves to earn his fifth clean sheet of the season.
 
With the win, the Eagles are riding an 18-game home unbeaten streak. The 12 regular season wins are the most in the program's NCAA Division II history. The record for wins in a season is 14 which came during the 2008 campaign.
 
In The CACC Tournament:
Post has qualified for the CACC Tournament in each of the last nine seasons, a stretch that dates back to 2005. In its Division II history, the Eagles are 10-8 in the conference tournament, and won the event in 2008. Under the tutelage of eighth-year head coach Ted Haley, Post is 9-6. In six of the last eight appearances, Post has reached at least the semifinals.
 
Back-to-Back Regular Season Championships:
After its unbeaten CACC Regular season, Post clinched its second straight regular season title on Friday, Oct. 26, with a 3-0 win over Nyack. Last season, the Eagles clinched the title with a 1-0 overtime victory over Holy Family on Oct. 22, after a goal by Francis Eno with 12 seconds remaining in the contest. Post was the top seed in the conference tournament, which it lost in the championship match.
 
High-Octane Offense…:
At the conclusion of the regular season, Post outscored its opponents 43-19 overall. On the year, the Eagles won six matches by three goals or more. Post is ranked 24th nationally in scoring offense with an average of 2.39 goals per game.
 
Assisted By A Sound Defense:
In those six three-goal victories, the Eagles' defense has recorded five clean sheets. As a team, Post has notched eight shutouts on the year, good for 26th in the NCAA in shutout percentage (0.44).
 
Nationally Ranked:
For the second consecutive season, the Eagles are nationally ranked in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Top 25. On Oct. 23 and Oct. 30, Post was ranked #25 in the country, and fourth in the East Region. Last year, the Eagles were ranked as high as no. 18 after they started the season 5-0-4.
 
In The All-Time Record Books:
On the active roster, Post boasts three of the top-four goal scorers in the program's Division II history. Senior Francis Eno sits second all-time with 28 tallies, junior Joe Baccielo is third with 20 goals and senior Eltany Morais  is ranked fourth with 16 goals. The trio is chasing Eurica Trowers who netted 32 markers in his collegiate career from 2006-08.
 
Conference Leaderboard:
Three Post players rank in the top-two in six statistical categories in the CACC. Joe Baccielo stands second in points with 34 and is third in goals with 13. Baccielo and Kevin Ipina are tied for second in the CACC in assists with eight apiece. Defensively, Errol Reid leads the CACC in save percentage (.860), and goals against (eight). He is second in goals against average with a mark of 0.85.
 
On the National Scene:
In the latest NCAA statistics report, which includes matches through Oct. 28, Baccielo and Ipina rank in the top-40 in six scoring categories. Baccielo is ninth in total points (34) and 12th total goals (13), 15th in points per game (1.89), 20th in total assists (eight) and 22nd in goals per game (0.72). Ipina is 20th in total assists (eight) and 39th in assists per game (0.44).
 
Home Unbeaten Streak:
Post men's soccer is currently riding an 18-game home unbeaten streak. The Eagles are 16-0-2 during the stretch, which dates back to Sept. 2010, and they have won their last 13 of their last 14 home tilts. The Eagles finished 2012 with a 7-0-1 mark at home. Last season, Post was 7-0-0 in home contests.
 
All-Time Series With Caldwell:
Post has won the last four head-to-head meetings, including a 2011 quarterfinal win at LaMoy Field. The Eagles 8-4-1 against the Cougars and are 5-1-1 at home.

Preseason Prognostications:
The Post men's soccer team was pegged as the favorite to win the CACC in the preseason poll, which was announced by conference officials on Aug. 22. The defending regular season champions, Post was awarded four first-place votes and 127 points by the league's 12 head coaches.
 
Reigning Regular Season Champs:
Powered by an 8-2-1 conference record during the 2011 campaign, the Post men's soccer team claimed its first CACC Regular Season Title in program history. The Eagles clinched the title with a 1-0 overtime victory over Holy Family on Oct. 22, after a goal by Francis Eno with 12 seconds remaining in the contest. Humble Tournament Hosts:
Post University will serve as the host of the 2012 CACC men's and women's soccer championship from Nov. 1-3. The women's semifinals will be held at Municipal Stadium and the men's matches will be held at LaMoy Field. The championship games will be contested at LaMoy Field. Following the quarterfinals at campus sites, the four remaining teams in both the men's and women's bracket will advance to the neutral site in Waterbury.
