Post Defeats Nyack In Five-Set Thriller

Four Eagles Record Double-Digit Kills

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University volleyball team defeated Nyack on Friday night 3-2. The Eagles won the first two sets 26-24 and 25-21, but the Warriors responded by taking the next two, 25-20 and 25-20. Post came from behind to take the final set 15-12. The Eagles now stand at 6-10 overall and 5-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play.
 
Nyack (9-9, 6-5 CACC) pulled ahead early in the fifth set 6-3, but Post responded with a 5-2 run to tie it at 8-8. Senior Monique Chance (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Senior Kelly Hayes (South Orange, N.J.) each had a kill during the stretch. Three attack errors by the Warriors helped the Eagles extend their advantage to 12-9, but Nyack answered and tied the set at 12-12. Two kills by junior Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) gave Post the victory.
 
Wilman led Post with 16 kills on the night. Hayes recorded 15 kills and 18 digs. Chance and graduate student Kelli Reynolds (Stamford, Conn.) each had 10 kills. Sophomore Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) added 49 assists and four service aces.
 
Post led early in the first set 5-2, but Nyack answered with a 13-5 run to pull ahead 15-10. The Eagles slowly chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied the set 19-19. A kill by Wilman gave Post a 22-19 lead late. The Warriors responded and tied the set 24-24. Slyaktina recorded an ace to give the Eagles the win.
 
The Eagles never trailed in the second set as they jumped out to a 14-8 advantage. Hayes had six kills to help build the lead. Nyack used an 11-5 run to tie the set 19-19.  Post closed out the stanza on a 6-2 run to put the Eagles ahead 2-0. Hayes recorded eight kills in the victory.
 
Nyack scored the first five points of the third set and never looked back. The Eagles got within one at 11-10, but the Warriors scored eight straight points to put the set out of reach.
 
A kill by junior Stephanie Zarakas (Patterson, N.Y.) gave Post a 9-4 lead in the fourth set and forced a Nyack timeout. The Warriors came out of the break with a 10-5 run to tie the set 14-14. The Eagles never led again in the stanza.
 
Post recorded a season-high 93 digs in the victory. Its previous high was 75 in a 3-2 victory over USciences on Sept. 29.
 
The Eagles look to add another CACC win tomorrow afternoon as they host Chestnut Hill. The match begins at 12:30 p.m.
