WATERBURY, Conn (April 3, 2011) Post University's softball team split a pair of conference games against Wilmington University Sunday afternoon in Waterbury. Wilmington won game one 6-1, but the Eagles took a 9-5 victory in game two.
Amy Mantha led the Eagles with three hits and three RBIs on four at bats.
Game two went scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. Sam Pagano walked to lead off the inning an advanced on a Cassidie Ern single. Brandi Davis hit a sacrifice bunt moving both runners into scoring position. Two consecutive RBI singles to centerfield from Mantha and Stephanie DeMartino put the Eagles on top 2-0.
Casey Scalfani came up and lined out to left scoring another run. Kim Bentson walked loading the bases, setting up a Lianna May 2 RBI single. Before the inning ended the Eagles worked back through the lineup with Pagano singled to score Bentson as Post University took a 6-0 lead.
In each of the next three innings, the Eagles would expand their lead by scoring one run in each inning. In the fourth Mantha hit one of her three RBIs with a single bringing in Ern who walked to get on base. In the fifth inning heads up base running by Christina Udris allowed her to take advantage of an error by Wilmington's catcher.
In the sixth inning Davis doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third setting up Mantha for the RBI single as the Eagles took a 9-5 victory. Johanna Rice was credited with her fourth win of the season.
In game one, it was the Wildcats taking a 6-1 victory as they would score first in the top of the opening inning. Post University would respond when with both Jackie Bonamassa and Ern on base, Ern took advantage of a wild pitch to race home knotting the game at one.
From that point forward it was all Wilmington taking a 6-1 victory.
Post University will return to competition in less than 24 hours as Concordia comes to Waterbury Monday for a conference doubleheader rescheduled from Friday afternoon.
