WATERBURY, Conn (April 18, 2011) Post University's softball team defeated the Nyack Warriors Wednesday afternoon 2-0 and 8-4 improving the Eagles to 11-5 in conference. Fourth ranked (CACC) Eagles were led by
Amy Mantha going 4-6 with one double, a homerun, and 4 RBI.
Jackie Bonamassa was 3-4 with one double and four runs scored.
In game one, sophomore Ashley Cummings retired seven batters en route to the 2-0 victory.
Post University got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning when Sam Pagano singled and moved to second when Brandi Davis grounded out to third. Bonamassa laid down a perfect bunt single putting runners on the corners and setting up Amy Mantha who hit an RBI single to center scoring Pagano for a 1-0 lead.
Still leading 1-0 in the top of the fifth and with two out Bonamassa walked. Mantha then came up and blasted a double to leftfield bringing in Bonamassa securing a 2-0 victory.
In game two, the Eagles carried the momentum of a victory into the game and translated that into four runs in the top of the first. With one out Bonamassa doubled, Mantha walked, and Christina Udris singled to load the bases. Stephanie DeMartino then doubled to left field scoring two runs. Kim Bentson then hit a 2 RBI single making it 4-2 Eagles.
Nyack would score their first runs of the day in the bottom of the inning making it 4-2 and added one more in the bottom of the fourth.
Now leading 4-3 heading into the top of the fifth, Bonamassa walked to get on base with one out and Udris doubled to left. DeMartino then hit her second 2 RBI double of the day bringing in both runners and extending the lead to 6-3.
In the top of the seventh with a 6-4 edge, Amy Mantha put a period on the day by blasting a two run homerun. Lead-off batter Cassidie Ern singled setting up Mantha for the two run blast on their way to an 8-4 win.
The Eagles will return to competition on Wednesday at Dominican for a doubleheader.
