Eagle Softball Falls to Concordia in Doubleheader

WATERBURY, Conn (April 11, 2011) Post University's softball team fell to Concordia in doubleheader Monday afternoon in Waterbury. The Eagles are now 15-16 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

In game one. it went nine innings before Concordia took a 9-8 victory. The Clippers got on the scoreboard first in the second inning making it 1-0.

In the bottom of the third, Post opened up the game scoring five runs kicked off by a Sam Pagano lead-off single to left as she advanced to second on an error. When Jackie Bonamassa grounded out, Pagano moved to third and scored on a Cassidie Ern double.

Brandi Davis reached on an error and Amy Mantha walked to load the bases setting up a Christina Udris grand slam giving the Eagles a 5-1 lead.

The Clippers rallied to close the score within one, 5-4 in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the inning, Udris hit her second homerun of the game, this time it was a solo blast to centerfield making it 6-4 Post.

Concordia came back to tie the game at six in the top of the top of the seventh sending the game into extra innings.

In the top of the ninth, Concordia scored three runs putting the pressure on the Eagles. With the international tie-breaker in effect, Mantha was placed on second. With one out, Stephanie DeMartino hit a two run homerun closing the Eagles within one, but they could not get any closer falling in game one 9-8.

In game two, Kim Bentson put the Eagles on the scoreboard first with a solo homerun to right field to lead-off the second inning.

With a 1-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the third, Davis and Mantha singled before Udris walked to load the bases with no outs. DeMartino doubled to left center scoring both Davis and Mantha. DeMartino advanced to third on the throw and after the ball went out of bounds behind the backstop scoring Udris giving Post a 4-1 lead.

DeMartino then scored when Casey Scalfani grounded out to short making it 5-1 Post thru three innings.

Concordia fought back in the fourth to tie the game at five and took a 9-5 lead in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth with one out, Udris was hit by a pitch. DeMartino came up and hit a 2 run homerun to centerfield making it 9-7 Concordia. The Clippers extended the lead in the sixth inning en route to a 12-7.

Post University will take on Dominican on the road Wednesday April 13.
