WATERBURY, Conn. (April 11, 2011)---
Dan Steers threw a remarkable 10 innings of one-run baseball, but Post University fell at Caldwell College, 2-1 in 14 innings on Monday.
Steers was absolutely masterful on the mound, striking out 12 Caldwell batters, and not surrendering a single walk.
Only an eighth-inning single by Stephen Luczaj kept Steers from hurling a complete game shutout.
Unfortunately for the Eagles (15-9, 5-4), Caldwell's Matt Cook was nearly as good, going 9 innings and giving up just one run while striking out 10.
The Eagles answered Luczaj's eighth-inning single with a clutch rally in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. With two outs and a runner on first, rightfielder
Aaron Lerma laced an RBI double to right center, scoring
Todd Blair and tying the game.
Lerma, who was lifted for a pinch runner, finished 2-for-4.
Dan Steers did his best Jack Morris impression in the tenth inning, striking out two and inducing a weak groundout back to the mound in an impressive 1-2-3 inning. (Morris famously pitched Minnesota to the World Series title in 10 innings in 1991.)
Hayden Allred would pitch 3.1 innings in relief of Steers, giving up just one earned run.
Centerfielder Jorge Ynoa won the game for Caldwell (14-15, 9-5 CACC) in the bottom of the 14th, singling up the middle and driving in second baseman Paul Nyitray to give the Cougars a 2-1 victory.
