Eagles Softball Drops Two against Southern New Hampshire

WATERBURY, Conn (March 24, 2010) Post University's softball team lost two games against Southern New Hampshire Wednesday afternoon at LaMoy Field in Waterbury. Southern New Hampshire took game one 4-2, while the score in game two was 8-5.

In the first game, Post University scored first in the bottom of the second inning.  Sam Canning hit to centerfielder Kate Stanley and the ball fell out of her glove putting Canning on first. Tierney Marceau grounded out moving Canning to second. Kim Bentson then came up and got a hit to centerfield and advanced to second on another error by Stanley. Lindsey Heiser came to the plate getting on base with an error by second baseman Melissa Vitagliano while scoring Canning and Bentson. 

The Eagles held a 2-0 lead until the 4th inning when lead-off batter Kelsea Cheney hit a single and scored after Vitagliano hit to left field with Johana Rice making an error on the play. The Penmen scored again in the 6th inning to tie the game at two. This time Elena Anderson doubled and scored on a Vitagliano RBI.

The game went into extra innings tied at two. In the top of the 8th, Stanley singled with one out. Anderson popped up to Emily Archer putting two away, but an error for Rice would put Vitagliano on base. When Jessica Douillette hit a single to center field, both runs scored giving Southern New Hampshire a 4-2 win.

In the second game, the Eagles once again jumped to a 2-0 lead. This time is was in the bottom of the first inning when Ern singled to lead-off and advanced on a Sam Pagano bunt. Canning hit a sacrifice RBI to score Ern, moving Pagano to third. Pagano scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the 2nd, the Penmen scored two as well with Anderson and Vitagliano on base, Nicole Newell hit a single scoring both runners. The Eagles would retake the lead in the 4th when Canning hit a lead-off homerun to left field making it 3-2.

Southern New Hampshire would win the game in the 5th inning by scoring 6 runs including a Newell homerun scoring with 3 RBIs putting the Eagles down 8-3.

Post University would try one final rally in the 6th inning when Canning walked and Archer homered making the final score 8-5, but would fall short in the end.

The Eagles will be back in action again on Thursday at Felician.
