Westchester University Tops Eagles Baseball 4-0
Box Score
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (February 28, 2010) Post University Baseball lost its last game of the Northeast Challenge in Myrtle Beach to Nationally ranked Westchester University 4-0 on Sunday. The Eagles are off to a 3-2 this season.
Westchester, currently #9 nationally and a World Series participant last year, jumped on Eagles' starter Michael Wolfe for 3 runs in the first inning, but from there the senior right-hander shut down the potent Golden Rams' offense with the help of the bullpen.
Offensively, the Eagles only mustered two hits against the hard throwing Jordan Lehman, who ended up striking out 9 while walking only 1 in his 8 innings of work.
"They were good there is no question about it; they're built to win a National Championship,” said AJ McNamara, Eagles head coach. “I didn't see too many weaknesses with their squad. Wolfe threw a few bad pitches the first inning and they jumped on him but to his credit, he settled down and did a great job of keeping a very good lineup down."
The Eagles would really only muster one opportunity to get back into the game when in the 5th, trailing 3-0, Freshman shortstop Todd Blair would lead off the inning with a triple to centerfield however Lehman would settle down to strike out the next three batters.
"Todd gave us a chance to maybe get through to them but we couldn't capitalize,” added McNamara. “It's something we talked about after the game and it's something that we have to understand if we hope to have a good year this year; we just can't leave runners in scoring position stranded, especially when we have three cracks at it."
Senior reliever Tim McCarthy threw 2.1 innings of relief while Junior Alex Jahn made his debut on the mound giving up one hit and striking out one.
The Eagles (3-2) will be off the entire week before heading down to Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina for their annual spring trip. Featured on the trip will be a single game against nationally ranked Catawba College.
