SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 18, 2010)- The Post University softball team lost a doubleheader to American International College Thursday afternoon at Judy Groff Field, in Springfield, MA 3-0 and 9-6. The Eagles drop to 0-10 on the season while AIC improves to 4-6.
AIC got the only run it would need in the first game in the bottom of the third as sophomore center fielder Ashleigh St. Peter (Gill, Mass.) singled through the right side to score senior shortstop Michelle Franey (Abington, Mass.) from second. That was all sophomore pitcher Kristen Dolan (Norwood, Mass.) would need as she scattered three hits with four strikeouts in seven innings for her first shutout of the season.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on two more runs in the fourth for the 3-0 final. Sophomore left fielder Michele Niejadlik (Suffield, Conn.) doubled to start the inning and later scored from third on a passed ball and sophomore first baseman Sarah Calgreen (Stratford, Conn.) doubled to left center to drive in freshman designated player Erin St. Pierre (South Berwick, Maine).
Senior pitcher Lindsey Heiser (Canajohaire, N.Y.) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and four Ks.
AIC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game-two as Calgreen tripled to right to lead off the game and later scored as Franey grounded out to short and senior second baseman Nicole Benoit (Walpole, Mass.) scored from third on an error after reaching base on an infield single.
That lead grew to 6-0 after the Yellow Jackets scored four times in the bottom of the fourth. Senior designated player Katie Elie (Worcester, Mass.) doubled down the left field line to plate junior catcher Becky Dion (Raynham, Mass.) and later followed freshman right fielder Laura Rousseau (Chicopee, Mass.) home after Calgreen's single to center went all the way to the fence after being misplayed by sophomore center fielder Samantha Pagano (Marlboro, N.Y.). Benoit then drove in Calgreen with a single to center.
The Eagles got three runs back in the top of the fifth on an RBI-single from sophomore catcher Amy Mantha (Agawam, Mass.), sophomore designated player Tierney Marceau's (Norton, Mass.) ground out to third and an RBI-double for senior shortstop Samantha Canning (Lynbrook, N.Y.) to make it a 6-3 contest.
The Yellow Jackets answered with a three-spot of their own in the bottom of the frame to push their lead back to six. Niejadlik scored on a wild pitch and Dion scored on Calgreen's sac-fly to center before Benoit singled up the middle to plate Rousseau.
The Eagles came back again with two runs in the sixth on Mantha's single to center and added one more in the seventh on sophomore second baseman Kim Bentson's (Brewster, Mass.) double to center, but were unable to come all the way back..
Mantha finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate with three RBIs and a run scored, while Canning was also 3-for-6 with one run scored and one driven in.
The Eagles will be in action again on Friday afternoon against Wilmington.
