Softball Defeats Felician in Doubleheader; Canning Leads the Way
WATERBURY, CT – The Post University Softball team defeated the Felician Falcons in a conference doubleheader Thursday 5-4 in game one, and 6-2 in game two.
In game one of the series, Felician started off strong by scoring 2 runs in the first inning. In the bottom of the inning, Samantha Canning singled and then advanced to second on a passed ball. When Stephanie Carrillo came up and grounded out to the shortstop, Canning scored making it 2-1.
Felician scored again in the 5th and 6th innings by bringing in one run an inning. Post would better that effort by scoring two runs in both the 5th and 6th. In the bottom of the fifth, Casside Ern singled and when Canning doubled, Ern scored. In a similar situation Amy Mantha came up and also doubled, this time scoring Canning.
Canning would complete an outstanding effort by bringing in the winning run with a double scoring Samantha Pagano and Emily Archer. Canning scored was 4-4, scored a run, and had 3 RBIs in game one.
In game two the Eagles won 6-2 as Carrillo picked up the win in both games by pitching in every inning. Again it was Canning who lead the way for Post and singled to lead-off. Kim Bentson then brought Canning in with a single of her own and Post lead 1-0 after the first.
Felician tied the game in the 4th at one a piece, but Post scored 5 runs in the bottom of the inning. After Nicole Gizzi* grounded out, Pagano tripled.
Ern walked and Canning singled bringing in Pagano. Using a Felician throwing error by the first baseman, Post scored Canning and Ern while advancing Lindsay Heiser to second. Following that Carrillo reached on an error advancing Heiser to third. When Bentson doubled, both Carrillo and Heiser scored to make it 6-1.
The Eagles held on for the win and a final score of 6-2. Post Universities Softball team will be in action again on Saturday at home against Goldey Beacom College for a conference double header.
