Soarin' Beyond the Sport is a series in which members of the Post University Athletic Communications Team sit down with student-athletes across all the varsity athletic programs offered at Post University to learn more about interesting stories about the players off the field, court, ice, etc., in a short interview format. All the interview questions, filming, editing, and write-ups are done by the featured member of the Athletic Communications Team to help them gain new experiences in a variety of important aspects in the field.

In this episode, Athletic Communications Spring Intern Jessica Petit sat down with Post University Women's Lacrosse freshman goalie Katheryn Sousa to discuss her work as a volunteer firefighter and balancing it with being a student-athlete.

WATERBURY, Conn. – Beyond her talent on the field for the Post University Women's Lacrosse Team, freshman goaltender Katheryn Sousa brings the same dedication and courage to her life off the turf as a volunteer firefighter. In this interview, Sousa shares how she balances life as a student-athlete while also serving her community.

Sousa's commitment to serving others demonstrates the same valor and determination she brings to the field, making her an inspiring example of what it means to be a Post University student-athlete. Balancing athletics with community service is not an easy task, yet Sousa tackles both with remarkable passion and drive, proving she is a standout both on and off the field.

To conclude the interview, Sousa talked about the advice she would offer to student-athletes hoping to get involved in volunteer work beyond their sport. The goaltender ended with a thoughtful note, "Just get yourself out there, it is definitely hard to start, but you learn your own skills. You learn how to manage time, you learn how to communicate, and you learn how to do all of those things. I feel like that all comes from volunteering because you're working with so many different other people, other than just people that are at your school."

This upcoming 2026 Spring season, Sousa will step onto the field as the Post University Women's Lacrosse team's goaltender to begin her first collegiate lacrosse season.
