Women's Ice Hockey Shutout for Third Consecutive Time Against Stonehill College

SHELTON, Conn. – Less than 24 hours following their last game, Post University Women's Ice Hockey return to the ice for their final matchup against conference opponent Stonehill College at the Sports Center of Connecticut in hopes of salvaging a split despite being shorthanded.

Still without Head Coach Gretchen Silverman and Assistant Coach Christopher Huntington who were in COVID protocols, the Eagles turned to the trio of Director of Hockey Operations Larry Erickson, Men's Ice Hockey Head Coach Tim Richter, and Men's Ice Hockey Assistant Coach Brandon Brown to lead the bench.

But the outcome would be similar to a day ago as three first-period goals would be more than enough for the Skyhawks to comfortably leave Shelton, Connecticut with a 4-0 shutout win as Post finishes the year with a 1-3-0 record in the regular season against Stonehill College.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, Stonehill College 4

Post University (4-18-0, 4-12-0 NEWHA)

Stonehill College (10-12-0, 10-6-0 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman forward Makenna Slocum got the scoring started just over five minutes into the game as sophomore forward Bailey Feeney, who had two goals in yesterday's game, along with senior defenseman Grace Parker helped Slocum put one past senior goalie Grace Glasrud. Slocum would deflect the initial shot in by Feeney to redirect is past Glasrud to give the Skyhawks the early one-goal advantage,

Odd-man rushes down the ice would prove to be costly for Post and eventually Stonehill would cash in two more times less than two minutes apart later on in the first. It was a two-on-one rush that led to freshman forward Peyton Wise hitting sophomore forward Lucie Turcotte converted in the opportunity. Sophomore forward Lily Geist would round out the scoring for the Skyhawks in the first as she wheeled around the right side of the offensive zone and found open space which she would use to blast one by Glasrud to give Stonehill a 3-0 lead after one.

While the scoring chances for the Eagles would come in larger amounts today compared to a day ago, they would still be unable to solve sophomore goalie Eve Stone. A few breakaway opportunities by Post would be sniffed out by Stone as well as a couple right-to-left chances that the Eagle offense would look to set up as the final 40 minutes wore on. In total, Stone would stop all 23 shots she faced while Glasrud made 39 saves on 43 total attempts by the Skyhawks.

Stonehill would add to their lead in the final period of play when sophomore forward Gracie Sacca received a pass on the defensive end from freshman defenseman Pursle Dyring-Anderson and turned up ice. Weaving around a few Post defenders, Sacca fired a shot from just beyond the blue line which managed to find its way into the back of the net for the Skyhawks as the Eagles would drop their final matchup of the season with their New England Women's Hockey Alliance opponent, 4-0., on Saturday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Eve Stone earned her third shutout win of the season and second in as many games since winter break, making 23 saves in earn the win
  • Post University finished 0-for-2 on the power play, totaling just four shots across those advantages -- The Eagles are now 0-for-28 in their last eight games on the power play with the last man-up goal coming against Franklin Pierce University on November 11th
  • After allowing a power play goal in five straight games before yesterday, the Post University penalty kill was perfect again, this time going 2-for-2 in the game
