Shelton, Conn. - The Post University men's hockey team rallied from an early one-goal deficit and scored twice in the third period to defeat Saint Michael's, 3-1 in the first round of the Northeast-10 (NE10) tournament on Saturday evening at The Rinks at Shelton.
The Eagles, seeded fourth are now 10-14-1 overall.Â
It was the first NE10 tournament win for the Eagles in program history.
After falling behind 1-0 after the first period, the Eagles got on the board at the 14:09 mark. After faceoff in the offensive circle
Niko Grollman skated in and took a shot at Saint Michael's goaltender Marshall Murphy, who stopped it, but Grollman grabbed his own rebound and stuffed it through to tie the game.
The game would remain tied into the second intermission, but the Eagles would take the lead at the 8:14 mark of the third as
Connor Barter took a pass from
Michael Gethings - who was behind the net - into the slot and ripped a shot past Murphy to put the Eagles up 2-1. It was Barter's fourth of the season.
Grollman added a bit of insurance in the third with an empty net goal at the 18:50 mark.
Brandon Brown was stellar in net, stopping 27 shots.
Post had 24 shots on goal, with four players tied with three shots apiece.
Post won 35 of 60 faceoffs, with Grollman going 13-5 in his draws.
John Krapian and
Evan Lugo each won eight.
"Today was a great milestone for our program," head coach
Pete Whitney said. "It was of course very satisfying earning the first playoff win in the history of the program. More impressive for me was how the team reset and focused after the first period and then took charge the next two periods."
Post will now travel up to Southern New Hampshire to take on the top seeded Penmen on March 1 at 7:40 p.m.
