Shelton, Conn. – The Post University men's hockey team rallied from a four goal deficit and late-game heroics from junior Anthony Giacomin sealed a 7-6 overtime win over Albertus Magnus in a non-conference match.
Giacomin scored the game-winner in OT rebounding a loose puck off a shot from classmate Jake Raleigh and putting it past Albertus Magnus goalkeeper Pierce Diamond to give the Eagles the win. The Eagles have now won two straight and are 4-13-1 on the season.
It was Giacomin who got the Eagles into overtime - as the Eagles had an extra skater - finding a loose puck in front of the net, this time off a shot from junior Evan Lugo to tie the game at 6-6.
Raleigh got the scoring going for the Eagles on a power play, as he split two defenders at the blue line and coasted for his seventh goal of the season at the 3:58 mark.
After a defensive battle over the next 12 minutes, Albertus Magnus would score four goals in the final 3:20 of the period, including three from Cameron Weitzman to give the Falcons the 4-1 lead after the first period.
They'd increase the lead to 5-1 in the second at the 6:50 mark on a goal from Jack Hannan before the Eagles began their rally.
At the 15:13 mark in the second, Raleigh scored his second goal of the game, this time on a loose puck in front the crease that he would back hand in as he fell to the ground for his second power play goal of the game.
With the Eagles trailing 5-2 going into the third, junior William Francis got into the scoring action at the 6:40 mark of the period, finding a loose puck in front of the net, making it a 5-3 game.
Francis once again would inch the Eagles even closer rebounding a shot from senior Tyler Hackett, fanning on his first attempt, then putting one past Diamond to make it a 5-4 game.
Hackett would get into the scoring action himself to cap the rally, taking a pass from sophomore Michael Karas, pulling the puck around the defender and putting it past the left shoulder of Diamond to tie the game at 5-5.
The Falcons would reclaim the lead at 6-5 at the 18:16 mark on a goal from Owen Allan before Giacomin's heroics.
"It was definitely one of the craziest games I've been involved in," coach Pete Whitney said. "Our ability to go back to the game plan and play the game the right way for the last period and a half was great to see."
Up next, the Eagles get back into Northeast10 action, playing at Assumption on Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m.
