Shelton, Conn. - The Post University men's hockey team made program history, winning its first Northeast10 game, defeating Saint Michael's, 5-1 on Saturday evening at The Rinks at Shelton.
Junior Brandon Brown was phenomenal in net, stopping 50 shots as the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead early.
Sophomore Niko Grollman got the Eagles (3-13-1, 1-10-0 NE10) on the board just 2:34 into the game, stealing a deflection off of a Purple Knights player and beating goalie Alec Lindberg one-one-one to put the Eagles up, 1-0. Senior Kyle Weiss didn't take long to put the Eagles up 2-0, ripping a slapshot for his first goal of the season.
Post took the 2-0 lead into the second period, and the Purple Knights (10-8-2, 6-5-1 NE10) cut the lead in half with a goal from Matt Egan at the 3:42 mark.
However, junior Anthony Giacomin would score the first of two straight power play goals, stuffing in a shot right in front of the net off a pass from junior William Francis to give the Eagles the 3-1 lead. It was Giacomin's fourth goal of the season.
Nearing the end of the second, Hackett would score his first of the game as, again, Francis would set up the shot in front of the net and Hackett's wrist shot blew by Lindberg to put the Eagles up, 4-1.'
Hackett would add an empty net goal in the third.
Brown really came alive for the Eagles in the second period, stopping 23 shots. His 50 saves were the third most he had this season.
"Probably the most complete game we have played yet this season," coach Pete Whitney said. "Playing the game the right way shows you can dominate an opponent. Two points against one of the first-place teams in the league speaks volumes as to what this team is capable of"
The Eagles will take on Albertus Magnus on January 28 at home at 7 p.m. The Eagles beat Albertus Magnus, 4-1 on November 18.
