Freshman Mertz Scores In First Collegiate Game

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The Post University women's soccer team got its season off to a great start as it defeated Queens in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., thanks to a goal by freshman Katharina Mertz (Buxtehude, Germany) in the 62nd minute.

Post avenged a loss to the Knights, as Queens defeated the Eagles last season, 1-0.

The Eagles and Knights went scoreless in the first half as both defenses made it difficult to get any offense going. Post took just three shots in the half, none of which were on target. Queens took just one shot in the half, which was stopped by juinior Laura Morgan (Brush Prarie, Wash.).

The second half was more of the same as both teams remained scoreless for the better part of the first 15 minutes of the half until freshman Angela Ciaramella (Hamden, Conn.) found Mertz for the goal. It was the first shot on goal in Mertz's career.

Queens only took one shot in the second half, which was not on goal. The Eagles outshot the Knights 9-2 on the afternoon. Senior Renel Dennis (Queens, N.Y.) took the other shot on goal for the Eagles.

Up next for Post (1-0-0) is host Mercy College on September 6 at noon.
