Box Score
Waterbury, Conn. – Senior Raven Wright-James (Middletown, Conn.) scored a career high 28 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Post University women's basketball team defeated Nyack, 95-70 for their third straight win in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) matchup in Nyack, N.Y.
The win was the second win over Nyack (6-15, 5-9) this season.
For the second straight game, the Eagles got off to a hot start, scoring the first nine points of the game. Four of those points were scored by Wright-James.
Unlike Post's previous opponent, the Warriors were able to come back and take a 17-16 lead after an Audrey Matteson layup with 13:05 left in the half.
The teams would trade baskets for the next four minutes, with Nyack eventually taking a 26-22 lead with 9:12 left.
But the lead didn't last long.
A three-point play by junior Jacquelynne Pugh (Grahamsville, N.Y.) sparked a 26-7 run to close out the half, putting the Eagles up, 48-33. During that stretch, Wright-James scored eight points, including two threes. Fellow senior Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) scored five, including a jumper with two seconds left in the half.
Wright-James finished the half with 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and six rebounds. Freshman Liz Falcigno (Middletown, Conn.) had eight points in the half, as did Latham.
The Eagles did not let off the gas pedal in the second half, outscoring the Warriors, 27-19 in the first ten minutes. Wright-James hit two more three-pointers in that stretch and sophomore Hailey Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) scored eight points in that stretch, effectively putting the game away early.
The teams would play evenly the final 10 minutes of the second half, with the Warriors getting no closer than a 19-point deficit the rest of the way.
With the win, the Eagles moved to 8-11 overall and 8-5 in the CACC.
Griffin finished with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. Latham had an all-around great performance with 19 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals. The Eagles shot an astounding 56.9 from the field and an unheard of 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from three-point land.
Matteson led the Warriors with 27 points. Camille Nwosu had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Up next for the Eagles is a CACC tilt against Philadelphia, the top team in the conference. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. tip at the Drubner Center on Feb. 8.
