Women's Basketball Soars into CACC Tournament on Six-Game Winning Streak with 64-47 Road Win Against Georgian Court

LAKEWOOD, N.J. –  Dominance. That seems to be the only word to describe Post University Women's Basketball on both sides of the ball during their now six-game winning streak after Saturday afternoon's 64-47 win over Georgian Court University in their regular-season finale. During that six-game stretch, the Eagles have won five of those games by double-digit margins, with the outlier being against Caldwell University, the team they will face in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Quarterfinals this Tuesday night as the sixth seed facing the third seed at 7:30 PM. The Eagles have beaten the Cougars twice this season, as well as three times overall dating back to last year.

THE BASIC

Post University 64, Georgian Court University 47

Post University (14-12, 11-9 CACC)

Georgian Court University (11-17, 10-10 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was all Post throughout most of the first half, allowing them to take a double-digit lead after the first quarter alone, 18-8. Right off the bat, a 7-0 run by the Eagle offense as three different scorers led the charge in the first 1:55 of action, while the defense held Georgian Court scoreless for the first 5:29 until senior forward Imani Gillette sunk a pair of free throws, and with 3:47 to go, the Lions' first field goal came from junior guard Niyell McCargo.

However, after Georgian Court pulled within six points, 12-6, with 3:15 remaining, a massive 19-2 run that lasted until near the midway point of the second turned that six-point lead into a 23-point advantage, 31-8. While the lead would be reduced to 15 points by halftime, 33-18, with a responding 10-2 run to end the frame, Post's shooting closed out at 43.8% overall, taking only six threes, and making two of them.

Both junior forward Alyssa Rossignol (13 points) and sophomore forward Tiara Tyson (11 points) were both in double digits at the break, going a combined 10-for-17 from the floor with 24 points, while senior forward Claire Greene pulled down an impressive seven rebounds in 14 minutes.

Gillette, who had given the Lions their first points of the game, closed with nine points on 3-for-5 shooting as Georgian Court was just 6-for-29 (20.7%) from the floor, including 2-for-11 (18.2%) in the first quarter, while McCargo led with six rebounds in a close battle on the boards that favored Post, 23-21.

Coming out of the half, firing on all cylinders, the once massive lead for the Eagles was suddenly reduced to just eight points, 37-29, at the 4:49 mark of the third. It was all due to a 17-4 stretch by the Lions, which ramped up the pressure on Post, before Greene's three-ball just over a minute later would be the catalyst for a big 11-0 run to end the frame.

Taking that 19-point lead into the fourth, sophomore guard Jasmine Day-Cox completed a stretch of five consecutive points, bringing her total to 10 points on the day and the lead back above 20 points for the Eagles, 50-29. From there, it was all elementary for Post, cruising their way to a 64-47 victory to finish the regular season with a 14-12 record after a 1-7 start and complete the conference slate at 11-9.

Rossignol finished the game with her first double-double of the season, scoring 25 points and garnering 10 rebounds, while shooting 10-for-18 from the floor as one of three Post players in double figures. Joining her was Tyson with her 14 points off the bench in 20 minutes of action, as well as Day-Cox, who had 12 points, while defensively Greene led the charge on the boards with 10 rebounds as well. While junior forward Karissa Smedley was limited in the playing time she saw today, coming off of an illness, Gillette, off the bench, scored over half of the 47 points the Lions scored with 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting in 29 minutes of action, while closing with eight rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Scoring 25 points, this is the 10th time this season in which Alyssa Rossignol has finished with 20-plus in a game – Rossignol shot 10-for-18 overall, while grabbing 10 rebounds and adding two assists to record her first double-double of the season
  • Imani Gillette led Georgian Court University's offense with 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting, accounting for over half of the Lions' points in the loss
  • Georgian Court University had its three-game winning streak snapped, in which they had won all three of those games by 19 or more points
  • Finishing the regular season with a 14-12 record, Post University will officially finish above .500 for the second time in three seasons under Head Coach Courtney Burns, as well as for the fifth time in the last six seasons

WHO'S NEXT
Post University will head into the CACC Quarterfinals on Tuesday as the sixth seed after Felician University locked up the second seed with a win against Chestnut Hill College today. The Eagles will take on a familiar foe in Caldwell University on the road at 7:30 PM

Post has won three consecutive games against Caldwell, sweeping them in the regular season, 55-42 at home and 53-48 on the road. In both instances, one big quarter by the Eagles helped them pull away from the Cougars, while also snapping their nine-game winning streak just under two weeks ago.
