Hailey Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) scored 15 points, but it wasn't enough as the Post University Eagles women's basketball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup to the University of the Sciences Devils, 85-53 in Philadelphia.
The loss – a third straight for Post - gives the Eagles a 4-2 record in the CACC and a 4-8 record overall. The Devils are now 5-1 in conference, and 10-3 overall.
The Devils started out hot, scoring the first five points of the game, and eventually taking a 23-7 lead with 12:28 left in the first half.
The Eagles would crawl back, going on a 14-5 run of their own thanks to four points each by senior
Raven Wright-James (Middletown, Conn.) and freshman
Liz Falcigno (Middletown, Conn.). A bucket by freshman
Dericka Sims (Chesapeake, Va.), cut the Eagles deficit to 28-21. The Devils, however, would finish with a 12-5 run as the two leading scorers on the team for the Devils, Brianne Traub and Camille McPherson scored seven and five points, respectively during the run. USciences would lead 40-26 at the break. There was no scoring by either team in the last 1:36 of the first half.
Griffin finished with 12 points in the half to lead the Eagles. McPherson finished with 15 points in the half, and Traub, 14. The Devils shot 48.6 percent in the first half to 33.3 percent for the Eagles.
The Eagles had an offensive spark as the second half began, going on a 13-4 run with senior
Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) capping the run with a layup, making it 45-39 in favor of USciences. It would be as close as the Eagles would get, as the Devils went on a 25-8 run, taking a 74-47 lead with 5:53 left in the half. From then on, the Devils cruised the rest of the way for the win.
Latham finished with nine points on the afternoon, giving her 1,464 on her career, trailing just
Tracey Garofalo, who is the all-time leader in points with 1,510. Sims also finished with nine points. The Devils shot 50.7 percent from the field. Traub finished with 26 points and eight rebounds. McPherson finished with 24 points and six rebounds. Isabella Ross finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 boards for the Devils.
The Eagles return to the Drubner Center on Jan. 8 for their first game at home since Dec. 13 as they take on Caldwell in a CACC matchup at 6 p.m.
