PREVIEW: Post Women’s Basketball Looks To Clinch CACC Playoff Berth In Season Finale

Eagles Sit In Third In The CACC North Heading Into Thursday

The Post University women's basketball team hosts USciences in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Thursday in search of a playoff berth. The Eagles are currently 11-14 overall and 9-9 in conference play and a victory over the Devils would clinch a CACC Playoff spot for the first time since 2005-06.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Georgian Court 58, Post 56 – Recap | Box Score
The Eagles led by as many as 16 in Saturday's CACC matchup against Georgian Court. A 20-4 run to begin the second half powered the Lions to a 58-56 victory over Post at the Drubner Center. Sophomore Jacquelynne Pugh (Grahamsville, N.Y.) led Post with 15 points. Junior Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) added 14 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Hailey Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) scored 12 points and grabbed eight boards off the bench.
 
After finding itself down throughout most of the first half, Post took a 16-15 lead with 6:13 remaining in the period after two free-throws by Pugh. The Eagles went on a 17-5 run from there to close out the half. A layup by graduate student Monique Chance (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 29 seconds remaining gave Post its largest lead of the stanza at 33-18.
 
Georgian Court quickly erased the deficit with a 20-4 run that knotted the game at 42-42 with 10:51 left. Christina White and Shauneia McPhearson scored 6 points and 5 points, respectively, during the stretch in which the Lions outrebound Post 13-6.
 
McPhearson went 4-for-4 from the foul line to push the Lions lead up to 57-52 with 28 seconds remaining, but missed two from the stripe late to leave the door open for Post. Webber hit two free-throws to pull the Eagles within one at 57-56 with six second left. Georgian Court split a pair from the line and left Post one last chance. Out of a timeout, Latham drove and missed a shot from the baseline as time expired.
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Eagles are 1-14 all-time against the Devils and have lost the last 14 matchups in the series. The lone victory for Post came on Jan. 11, 2003 in a 70-68 triumph at home.

SCOUTING THE DEVILS
USciences enters Thursday's contest at a record of 13-11 overall and 11-6 in conference play. The Devils have clinched the third seed in the CACC South. USciences has won its last three games, most recently a 68-54 victory over Georgian Court. The Devils shoot at a 39.3 percent clip from the field, which is good for second in the conference. They are also second with 15.1 assists per game. Sophomore guard Brianne Traub leads the CACC and is tenth in the nation at 18.7 points per game. Traub also leads the Devils at 7.5 rebounds per contest.
 
LATHAM SCORES 1,000 IN HER CAREER
Aubrey Latham scored 21 points against Concordia on Jan. 15 to join the Eagles' 1,000-Point Club. She hit the milestone with a layup in the first half against the Clippers. Latham is the fifth player in Post University history to score 1,000 points and is third on the all-time scoring list.

RECORD BREAKING PERFORMANCE
Junior Fernanda Mansilla has been putting her teammates in position to score all season. She leads the CACC and is tenth in the nation with 5.5 assists per contest. She broke Post's single-season assists record on Feb. 2 against Holy Family with five assists and now sits at 138 on the year. The old record was 119 set by Melissa Czeremcha during the 2003-04 campaign. Against Chestnut Hill on Dec. 8, Mansilla dished out 11 assists, the highest total by an Eagle since the 2004-05 season.
 
GRIFFIN HONORED AS TOP ROOKIE
Freshman Hailey Griffin was chosen as CACC Rookie of the Week on Jan. 14. Griffin averaged 12.5 points in two games for the week of Jan. 6- Jan. 12., including a career-high 14 points in an 80-61 victory over Nyack. She was 9-for-16 from the floor and 6-for-8 from distance for the week. She is the first Eagle to be honored by the conference this season.
 
AMONG THE NATION'S ELITE
As of the NCAA Division II rankings from Feb. 17, Fernanda Mansilla ranks tenth in the nation with 5.5 assists per game. Monique Chance is 12th with 10.7 rebounds per game. The Eagles are 36th in the country with 6.9 made three-pointers per game.
 
EAGLES AMONG CACC LEADERS
Post averages 6.9 three-pointers made per game to lead the CACC and is third with a 31.5 shooting percentage from deep. The Eagles are the second-highest scoring team in the conference at 65.5 points per game. Fernanda Mansilla leads the conference with 5.5 assists per game. Aubrey Latham is fourth with 17.3 points per game and third with a 38.9 shooting percentage from deep. Monique Chance is second with 10.7 boards per game.
 
LIVE BY THE THREE
The Eagles have been knocking down shots from behind the arc all season. In nine of its victories this season, Post has taken over 20 shots from distance and made at least seven. The Eagles are the top three-point shooting team in the conference at 6.9 made per game. Against Bloomfield on Jan. 3, they made a season-high 15 from distance on 50.0% shooting.
 
CLIMBING UP THE CAREER LIST
With at team-leading 256 rebounds this season, Monique Chance has moved into second place in Post history for career rebounds. Chance sits at 811 boards for her career. Tadj Williams, who played from 2003-06, is first with 891 career rebounds.
 
SCORING 20-PLUS
Aubrey Latham scored 20 points in four consecutive games from Jan. 12-Jan. 23. Over the stretch she averaged 22.7 points per game with a high of 25 coming against Mercy on Jan. 21. She had never scored 20-plus points in more than two straight games in her career before the four-game streak. Latham has scored 20 or more points in 10 games this season.
 
RACKING UP THE DOUBLE DOUBLES
Monique Chance has been filling the box score all season. She has eight double-doubles which is good for 51st in the nation. Chance recorded four consecutive double-doubles from Dec. 19-Jan. 5. Last season, Chance tallied six double-doubles and has 19 total in her career.
 
LONGEST IN PROGRAM HISTORY
The Eagles posted their longest conference winning streak in program history as they won nine straight CACC games from Feb. 11-Dec. 19, 2012. Post closed out the 2011-12 season with four consecutive conference wins. The Eagles began 2012-13 with their best-ever CACC start with five straight victories. Post defeated Chestnut Hill, Wilmington, and Nyack twice during the streak. Felician ended the stretch with a 68-66 win over Post on Dec. 19.
 
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS
Post was selected to finish fifth in the North Division of the CACC in the preseason poll announced on Nov. 12. The Eagles received 35 total points in the poll. Caldwell garnered 89 points and 11 first place votes and was selected as the North Division favorite. Defending conference champion, Holy Family, earned 95 points and 11 first place votes and was tabbed as the South Division favorite.
 
SCHULER NAMES THE CAPTAINS FOR HIS INAGURAL CAMPAIGN
Post University women's basketball head coach Stephen Schuler named senior guard Casey Brooks, graduate student Monique Chance and junior guard Aubrey Latham captains for the 2012-13 season. Brooks is one of the Eagles' top shooters. She led the team and was second in the conference with a 38.9 shooting percentage from behind the arc. Chance was 13th in NCAA Division II with 11.3 rebounds per game and named CACC Honorable Mention in 2011-12. Latham led the Eagles in scoring in 2011-12, averaging 15.5 points per game. She comes into the season just 238 points away from 1,000 for her career.
