NEW CASTLE, Del. -Â Senior
Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) scored a career-high 41 points - including 16-for-16 from the free throw line - as the Post University women's basketball team routed the Wilmington Wildcats, 93-77 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup in Wilmington, De. Saturday afternoon.
Latham's 41 points put her at 1,421 for her career, just 90 points away from breaking the school's all-time scoring mark which is held by
Tracey Garofalo (Class of 2002) who finished with 1,510 points. The 16-for-16 from the free-throw line was a CACC record for most free throws made in a game without a miss, surpassing the mark Krystina Agard of Concordia set in Feb. 2012 (14-for-14)
The Eagles jumped out to a commanding 15-5 lead in the first four minutes of the game thanks to five points from junior
Jacquelynne Pugh (Grahamsville, N.Y.) and four points from freshman
Liz Falcigno (Middletown, Conn.). The Wildcats would close the gap to two points (21-19) with 11:07 left before the Eagles ripped open a 22-7 run. During that span, Latham scored 12 of her 23 first half points, giving Post the 43-26 lead. The teams would trade basketball the rest of the half and the Eagles would go into the locker room with a 54-35 lead.Â
Falcigno finished with 15 points in the first half and senior
Raven Wright-James (Middletown, Conn.) finished with seven rebounds in the half. Latham was 15-for-15 from the free-throw line in the first half.
The second half started much like the first, with the Eagles jumping out to a 6-0 run to begin the half, taking a 60-35 lead, giving them their biggest lead of the game. The Wildcats would get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way, but by then, the game was far out of reach.
Falcigno finished with 20 points on the day and Wright-James finished with 14 rebounds on the day to go along with her six points and five assists. Pugh finished with nine points.
The Eagles dominated in the paint, outscoring the Wildcats, 34-22. They also held the Wildcats to 39.1 percent shooting from the field. Tenicia Spence led the Wildcats (1-5, 1-2 CACC) with 28 points. Jasmine Lee scored 20.
The Eagles upped their record to 4-5 on the season, and stayed undefeated in the CACC at 4-0, good for a first first-place tie in the North Division with Bloomfield.
Up next for the Eagles is an out of conference matchup against Southern Connecticut State University on Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. in the Drubner Center. SCSU defeated the Eagles in their last matchup, 87-72 on Nov. 23.
