WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's volleyball team topped Concordia in straight sets Friday night at the Drubner Center. The set scores were 25-20, 25-23, 25-19. Freshmen
Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) and
Nicole Brown (Queens, N.Y.) combined for 25 kills for the Eagles.
Junior
Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) notched a game-high 31 assists and had an impressive four service aces for Post. Sophomore
Janiellee Alvarez (Norwich, Conn.) also had four service aces along with 10 digs.
Post got off to a tremendous start and took a demanding 10-1 lead to open up the match behind service aces from Alvarez and Slyaktina. The Eagles kept on rolling and extended the lead to 18-6 after an ace by Wilman. The Clippers managed to claw their way back into it, using a 14-6 run to make it 24-20, but the Eagles put away the set with a Wilman kill.
Concordia put the pressure on in the second set and gave Post quite a challenge. The Clippers took the first two points of the set, and after trading points back and forth, Concordia scored four points in a row to grab an 11-8 lead. Concordia held a two point lead until Post broke out with five straight points to regain the lead. The Eagles had the Clippers on the ropes yet again with a 24-19 lead before Concordia fought back to come within one, but the rally fell just short, giving Post a 25-23 win.
The Eagles opened the final set with three straight points. The Clippers took the next three points, but a kill by freshman
Kerrin Kallmann (Lake Grove, N.Y.) gave the lead right back to Post, forcing a Concordia timeout. From that point on, Post maintained the lead for the remainder of the set. After a Brown kill gave the Eagles an eight point advantage, the Clippers used a 10-6 run to come within four at 23-19. That was a close as Concordia would come, and Post took the final two points to grab its third victory of the season.
The Eagles finished with an astonishing 15 service aces on the night. Senior
Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) had three service aces, six kills and nine digs. Brown recorded two service aces, while Griffin and Kallmann each had an ace of their own.
Leina Braga led the charge for the Clippers with eight kills and nine digs. The loss puts Concordia at 1-5 on the season.
Post (3-10, 3-2 CACC) travels to Lakewood, N.J. on Saturday, Oct. 5 for an 11 a.m. match with Georgian Court next.
