WATERBURY, Conn. – Eagles volleyball gets into the win column for the first time this season for one game before ultimately splitting for the day, knocking off tournament host Molloy University and later falling to the University of Tampa.
GAME ONE
Post 3, Molloy 1
Seeking revenge after beginning their season 0-2 yesterday in the Long Island Invitational Tournament, Tiffany Verni and her Eagles team came ready to play today as a series of their own kills and aces coupled with Molloy errors head started them to a set one victory.
In set two, a slew of service aces from the Lions' own Isabella Smith set the tone early. Molloy continued to string together small runs to go up on Post 18-10. Post attempted to go on one final run but could not find an answer for Molloy's aggressive offense before eventually dropping the set 19-25.
Kelsea Moore came alive in set three for the Eagles with six kills as Lilly Chavez added four to win the Eagles the third set in a close battle, 25-23. Set four was a 25-20 win on Post's part after five Molloy errors in the first 11 points boosted Post's momentum and Moore and Chavez continued their damage. Chavez finished the game with 15 kills and Moore finished with 14, adding 17 digs. Setter Kata Kovacs had 34 assists in the game.
GAME TWO
Post 0, Tampa 3
In the second game of the day and final game of the tournament, Post started off evenly matched with Tampa's Spartans with persistent defense from Vivien Andrea Fehervari. At 10-12 in the first set with Post trailing, Tampa went on a 7-0 run in which Julianna Baskin and Ainhoa Molleja each had two kills. Coach Verni called timeout for her team to regroup, and the next two points were kills from Post's game one standout, Kelsea Moore and middle blocker, Duru Karagoz, but another kill from Molleja on the other side of the net once again shifted momentum in Tampa's favor and they finished Post 25-16.
Set two proved to be another even match, with each team going back and forth again thanks to Moore's big swings. At 20-16 in favor of the Eagles, the Spartans finished the game on a 9-0 run, now up 2-0 with only one more set needed to win the game.
What proved to be the last set of the day for Post was evenly matched through the first 19 points with Post ahead, 10-9. Then, Tampa went on yet another run, this time the longest of the game thus far, 8-0. Post ended up scoring four more points in the set due to Tampa errors alone, with the final score for the third set settling at 25-14.
The Eagles will head to Allendale, Michigan next weekend to participate in another tournament. Their next game is Friday, Sept. 4 at 1:00 p.m. against Grand Valley State University.
