CALDWELL, N.J. – The Post University women's volleyball team was swept on the road by Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) powerhouse Caldwell Wednesday night. The set scores were 22-25, 15-25, 20-25. Junior
Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) had a pair of service aces and 18 assists for the Eagles. It was the fifth straight loss for Post.
Senior
Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) led the team with eight kills and five digs. Sophomore
Jennifer Lombardo (Cold Spring, N.Y.) had a team-high 10 digs.
Post actually got off to a tremendous start, taking leads of 5-1 and 7-2 to start off the match. As Caldwell began to make a comeback, Wilman recorded three of Post's next four points to extend the lead to 11-8. After that, the Cougars went on an 8-4 run to take their first lead 16-15. Caldwell would extend the lead to three before a Wilman ace brought Post within one at 21-20, but the Cougars would take the set 25-22.
The two teams went back and forth to start out the second set before Caldwell took command. After the set started out tied 4-4, Caldwell scored the next five points to lead 9-4. Then Post scored five straight points of its own to tie the match at nine apiece. The Cougars then went on a 9-1 run to blow it open and went on to take the set easily, 25-15.
The Eagles fell behind at the beginning of the final set but would not just throw in the towel. Caldwell had commanding leads of 5-1 and 9-4 early, but Post fought back. Post then used a 7-4 run to come within two at 13-11. After a Post timeout with the Eagles trailing 19-15, Post went on a 5-3 run to make it 22-20. However, Caldwell scored the final three points of the set to complete the sweep.
Senior
Stephanie Zarakas (Patterson, N.Y.) and freshman
Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) recorded two block assists each. Post (4-17, 4-8 CACC) is now on the outside looking in, sitting in fifth place in the CACC North standings.
Athena Nestoras had 10 kills and eight digs for the Cougars. Caldwell (14-9, 11-2 CACC) remains in first place in the CACC North.
The Eagles look to bounce back on Friday night when they visit Concordia for a 6 p.m. match.
