WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Post University volleyball team fell on the road to in-state rival New Haven in straight sets Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The set scores were 20-25, 15-25, 16-25. Junior
Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) recorded game highs of three service aces and 13 digs for the Eagles.
Senior
Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) finished with nine kills and six digs for Post. Freshmen
Kerrin Kallmann (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and
Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) added four kills each.
Post held its own in the opening set and stayed on pace with New Haven. After falling behind 5-1 to open the match, the Eagles rallied to take the lead using a 6-1 run behind two of Slyaktina's three service aces. The Chargers then used a 9-2 run to regain the lead and extend it to 15-8. Post fought back to come within three at 20-17 after a 9-5 run and again drew to within three at 23-20 after a Wilman kill. New Haven took the next two points, however, to take it 25-20.
Similar to the opening set, Post fell behind 5-1 again to open up the second set. Again the Eagles erased an early deficit and used an 8-3 run to take their only lead of the set at 9-8. After a timeout by New Haven, the Chargers regrouped and went on runs of 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0 to win the set 25-15.
The Eagles finally got off to a better start in the third set and trailed by just one at 4-3 early on. After four straight points by the Chargers, two kills by Griffin and one by Wilman helped the Eagles take the next three points to make it 8-6. New Haven controlled the remainder of the set and put the Eagles away with a 3-0 sweep.
Post (2-10) finished with 27 attack errors compared to just 16 by New Haven. The good news for the Eagles is that they are still 2-2 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) and are currently sitting in third place in the North Division.
New Haven improved to 7-3 on the season and is now 4-1 at home. Amber Cannady led the way for the Chargers with 11 kills and six total blocks.
Next up for Post is a home contest with Concordia on Friday, Oct. 4 at the Drubner Center at 7 p.m.
