Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Post University women's volleyball team fell to in-state rival Southern Connecticut on the road Wednesday night 3-0 in a non-conference match at Pelz Gymnasium. The set scores were 23-25, 18-25, 23-25. Senior Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) recorded a double-double for Post with a game-high 15 kills and 11 digs.

Freshman Nicole Brown (Queens, N.Y.) added seven kills, five digs, two block assists and a pair of service aces for the Eagles. Junior Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) helped out with 30 assists and 10 digs.

The Eagles battled brilliantly throughout in an attempt to pull off a major upset. Post stuck right with Southern Connecticut in the opening set, and two kills from Wilman gave the Eagles a 4-3 advantage early. Keeping the pressure on, the Eagles would go on to extend the lead to 11-7, forcing a timeout by the Owls. A kill by freshman Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) gave Post a 15-10 lead before Southern Connecticut took the next eight points in a row. It was a heated battle with the score tied at 22 apiece, but the Owls scored three of the final four points and took the set.

The second set consisted of numerous runs by both squads. After a 3-0 run capped by a kill from senior Stephanie Zarakas (Patterson, N.Y.), Post took a 7-4 lead and continued to hold a three point advantage at 14-11. Southern Connecticut then scored six straight points, forcing a timeout by head coach Michael Brienza. The Eagles tied it back up at 18, but the Owls scored the final seven points to grab a 25-18 set victory.

After falling behind 5-1 early in the final set, Post fought back to take an 11-10 lead behind four Wilman kills. A kill from Slyaktina gave the Eagles a three point lead at 15-12 before the Owls began to make a comeback. Southern Connecticut used a 7-3 run to regain the lead 19-18 and kept a one point advantage at 21-20. Capped off by a Wilman kill, Post scored the next three points to snag a two point lead. After a Southern Connecticut timeout, the Eagles failed to close out the set, and the Owls scored the final four points of the match to win 3-0.

Zarakas contributed with five kills and a block assist for the Eagles. Moving quickly up the ranks, she is now tied with Taylor Doyle for seventh on Post's all-time block assists list with 97.

Sarah Beres led the Owls with seven kills and three service aces. The win puts Southern Connecticut at 13-6 on the season.

Post (4-14) returns home on Friday, Oct. 18 to face Nyack at 7 p.m. at the Drubner Center.
