Volleyball Falls to USciences, 3-1

Zarakas Records Season-High Nine Kills

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University volleyball team fell to USciences 3-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center. The set scores were 23-25, 9-25, 27-25, 13-25. Senior Stephanie Zarakas (Patterson, N.Y.) led the Eagles with a season-high nine kills.

Senior Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) had seven kills and 14 digs for Post. Junior Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) added 28 assists, 11 digs, three kills and two service aces.

USciences jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but an ace by Slyaktina would bring Post even at 4-4. The Devils then scored seven straight points to take a commanding 11-4 lead, forcing a Post timeout, and would extend the lead to 14-5. Post responded with eight points in a row to come within one at 14-13. Just when it looked like USciences had the set won, Post went on a 3-0 run to tie the match at 23. However, two kills by Desirae Lair gave the Devils the set win.

The second set was completely dominated by USciences. The Devils started the set off by taking the first five points and would extend the lead to six at 10-4. A kill by freshman Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) got Post within three at 11-8, but USciences cruised the rest of the way, taking a 25-9 set win.

Post made quite a comeback in the third set after trailing by as much as six points. With the score tied at seven, the Devils scored five straight points to take a 12-7 lead and would extend that lead to six at 15-9. Then the Eagles began their incredible comeback. Post went on runs of 5-0 and 4-0, capped off by a Slyaktina kill to gain a 19-17 lead. A Wilman kill completed the comeback, giving Post a 27-25 win.

The Eagles kept the intensity up at the start of the fourth set and after consecutive kills by Zarakas, the match was tied up at six apiece. USciences followed that with five straight points, grabbing an 11-6 lead and forcing a Post timeout. The Devils controlled the remainder of the set, winning their eighth match of the season.

Freshman Nicole Brown (Queens, N.Y.) served well for the Eagles and had two service aces. Post still remains in third place in the CACC North standings with losses by both Felician and Dominican.

Nicole Rivera was the difference maker for the Devils, recording an impressive seven service aces and 13 digs. USciences had a ton of success serving, finishing with 19 service aces.

Post (4-13, 4-5 CACC) travels to Southern Connecticut next on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
