PREVIEW: Eagles Look To Match Last Season’s CACC Win Total At Caldwell

Post Hopes To Sweep Season Series Against Cougars

The Post University women's basketball team hits the road to take on Caldwell in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division matchup on Saturday, Jan. 12. The Eagles are looking for their second consecutive victory and to match last season's conference win total of eight games. Caldwell has won four of its last five and upset No. 11 Holy Family on Jan. 5.

After finding themselves down 35-28 at the break, the Eagles shot 53.8 percent in the second half on its way to a victory over Caldwell on Dec. 4, 2012. It was Post's eight consecutive CACC win. Graduate student Monique Chance (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied her second consecutive double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Fernanda Mansilla (Ancud, Chile) filled the stat sheet with 10 points, nine assists, and six boards.
 
The Eagles made seven of their first nine shots as they stormed out to a 16-4 lead at the 14:10 mark of the first half. Post went cold from there as Caldwell staged a 17-0 run over a stretch of 6:42 to pull ahead 27-19 with 5:58 remaining in the half. Sophomore Jacquelynne Pugh (Grahamsville, N.Y.) hit a shot from distance to pull the Eagles within one at 46-45 and spark a 14-4 run with 13:06 remaining. Freshman Hailey Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) hit her only basket of the contest at the 4:22 mark to give Post its largest lead of the second half at 61-51.

A 16-3 run to begin the second half helped the Eagles win its seventh CACC game of the season on Wednesday night against Nyack at the Drubner Center. Junior Jessica Webber (Naugatuck, Conn.) was one of four Eagles in double-digits, leading the way with 20 points on the night. Raven Wright-James was 3-for-5 from beyond the arc on her way to 16 points.
 
Wright-James nailed three from distance as part of a 17-2 run by the Eagles that gave them a 23-12 lead with 11:52 remaining in the half. Post went cold from the field over the next five minutes as the Warriors closed to gap to 27-25 at the 6:53 mark. The Eagles exploded out of halftime on a 16-3 run to stretch their lead to 57-36 with 11:43 remaining. Webber nailed a three-pointer with 4:42 remaining to give the Eagles their largest lead of the night at 74-48 as they coasted to the victory.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
The Eagles snapped their 10-game losing streak against the Cougars with a 70-62 victory at home on Dec. 4. Overall, Post is 6-15 against Caldwell since 2002. The Eagles' only victory at Caldwell came in a 63-58 triumph on Jan. 17, 2006.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
Caldwell comes into the weekend at 6-11 overall and 4-4 in CACC play. The Cougars signature win came at home on Jan. 5 as they upset No. 11 Holy Family, 53-52. Caldwell has won its last two games and four of its last five overall. Senior guard Torrey Jones is second in the CACC at 17.5 points per game. Junior forward Jeanette Anderson averages 14.9 points per game is tied for second with 10.4 rebounds per contest. She is second in the nation with 10 double-doubles on the year. The Cougars are one of the top shooting teams in the CACC and are third in the field goal percentage (38.0%) and free throw percentage (67.8%). They are second behind Post in three-point shooting percentage at 32.1%. Caldwell is sixth in the nation in personal fouls, only committing 13.0 per game.
 
AMONG THE NATION'S BEST
As of the NCAA Division II rankings from Jan. 10, Fernanda Mansilla ranks 12th in the nation with 5.7 assists per game. Monique Chance is 21st with 10.4 rebounds per game and is 21st with six double-doubles. The Eagles are 24th in the country with 7.6 made three-pointers per game.
 
EAGLES AMONG CACC LEADERS
Post averages 7.6 three-pointers made per game to lead the CACC and is first with a 33.0 shooting percentage from deep. The Eagles are also the highest scoring team in the conference at 67.7 points per game. Fernanda Mansilla leads the conference with 5.7 assists per game. Aubrey Latham leads the CACC in shooting percentage behind the arc at 41.3%. Latham is also sixth in scoring at 15.9 points per contest. Monique Chance is tied for second with 10.4 boards per game.
 
LIVE BY THE THREE
The Eagles have been knocking down shots from behind the arc all season. In all eight victories this season, Post has taken over 20 shots from distance and made at least seven. The Eagles are the top three-point shooting team in the conference at 7.6 made per game. Against Bloomfield on Jan. 3, they made a season-high 15 from distance on 50.0% shooting.
 
DISHING OUT THE ASSISTS
Junior Fernanda Mansilla has been putting her teammates in position to score all season. She has 85 total assists on the season and leads the CACC and is eighth in the nation with 5.6 assists per contest. Against Chestnut Hill on Dec. 8, Mansilla dished out 11 assists, the highest total by an Eagle since the 2004-05 season.
 
CLIMBING UP THE CAREER LIST
With at team-leading 145 rebounds this season, Monique Chance has moved into second place in Post history for career rebounds. Chance sits at 701 boards for her career. Tadj Williams, who played from 2003-06, is first with 891 career rebounds.
 
RACKING UP THE DOUBLE DOUBLES
Monique Chance has been filling the box score all season. She has six double-doubles which is good for 18th in the nation. Chance saw her streak of four consecutive double-digit points and rebounds games end Jan. 9 against Nyack. Last season, Chance recorded seven double-doubles and she has 17 total in her career.
 
COUNTDOWN TO 1,000 POINTS
Aubrey Latham comes into the week with 969 career points and is just 31 points away from joining the 1,000-point club. She has averaged 16.0 points per game in her career against Caldwell. Her highest output was 22 points, which she achieved twice. Latham did not play in the earlier meeting this season.
 
LONGEST IN PROGRAM HISTORY
The Eagles posted their longest conference winning streak in program history as they won nine straight CACC games from Feb. 11-Dec. 19, 2012. Post closed out the 2011-12 season with four consecutive conference wins. The Eagles began 2012-13 with their best-ever CACC start with five straight victories. Post defeated Chestnut Hill, Wilmington, and Nyack twice during the streak. Felician ended the stretch with a 68-66 win over Post on Dec. 19.
 
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS
Post was selected to finish fifth in the North Division of the CACC in the preseason poll announced on Nov. 12. The Eagles received 35 total points in the poll. Caldwell garnered 89 points and 11 first place votes and was selected as the North Division favorite. Defending conference champion, Holy Family, earned 95 points and 11 first place votes and was tabbed as the South Division favorite.
 
SCHULER NAMES THE CAPTAINS FOR HIS INAGURAL CAMPAIGN
Post University women's basketball head coach Stephen Schuler named senior guard Casey Brooks, graduate student Monique Chance and junior guard Aubrey Latham captains for the 2012-13 season. Brooks is one of the Eagles' top shooters. She led the team and was second in the conference with a 38.9 shooting percentage from behind the arc. Chance was 13th in NCAA Division II with 11.3 rebounds per game and named CACC Honorable Mention in 2011-12. Latham led the Eagles in scoring in 2011-12, averaging 15.5 points per game. She comes into the season just 238 points away from 1,000 for her career.
