MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Post University volleyball squad dropped both matches of its tri-match on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles fell to NYIT 3-0 in the early match before losing to Southern New Hampshire 3-1. Post now stands at 1-5 (1-0 CACC) to start the season.
Senior captain
Kelly Hayes (South Orange, N.J.) led Post with 18 kills on the afternoon. Junior
Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J) had 16 kills and four service aces. Sophomore
Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) recorded 54 assists. The Eagles had 10 team blocks over the two matches.
NYIT 3, POST 0 (26-28, 22-25, 20-25)
The Eagles opened an 8-5 lead in the first set following a service ace by senior
Brieonna Skipper (Rahway, N.J.). NYIT battled back to tie the score at 11-11. Post answered with a 6-2 run to take a 17-13 advantage. Junior
Stephanie Zarakas (Patterson, N.Y.) had a block and a kill during the stretch.
A 9-0 run in the middle of the second set put the Bears ahead 15-9. The Eagles responded with five straight points, helped by two kills by Wilman, to get within one at 15-14. NYIT pulled ahead again, opening its largest lead of the set at 23-16.
Neither team could gain an advantage at the start of the final set and were tied 13-13 midway through. NYIT reeled off a 7-1 run to pull ahead 20-14. The Eagles answered with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the set at 20-20. Senior
Monique Chance (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a kill and two block assists during the comeback. The Bears scored five straight points to take the match.
Wilman led the Eagles with nine kills and three service aces. Slyaktina added 25 assists. The Eagles recorded eight team blocks in the match. NYIT's Shelby Cable led all players with 12 kills.
SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE 3, POST 1 (18-25, 26-24, 13-25, 20-25)
Southern New Hampshire took an early 8-5 lead in the first set. Back-to-back kills by Chance and Wilman tied the score 10-10. The Penman went on an 8-3 run to pull ahead 18-13, their largest lead of the set.
Hayes had two early kills as Post opened up a 6-2 advantage. A 7-2 run followed by an 8-3 stretch gave SNHU a 17-11 lead. Two kills by Slyaktina held the Eagles comeback to tie it at 22-22. Post scored three straight points to close out the set.
A kill by Wilman gave the Eagles an early 5-3 lead. Attack errors hurt Post as the Penman reeled off a 15-4 run to put the set out of reach at 18-9. Hayes had a late ace to pull the Eagles within eight at 20-12.
Hayes recorded three consecutive kills to start the fourth set as the Eagles opened a 6-2 lead. Down 17-13, Post went on a 5-1 run to tie the set 18-18. Graduate student
Kelli Reynolds (Stamford, Conn.) had two kills during the stretch. The Penman scored five straight points to close out the match.
Hayes finished with 11 kills and nine digs. Slyaktina led the Eagles with 30 assists and two service aces. Erica Solomon had 16 kills for SNHU.
The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 11 against Mercy. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
