Golf Heads To First NCAA Championship In School History

The Championship Field Features Five of the Last Eight National Champions

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – With a fourth place finish at the NCAA Atlantic/East Regional, the Post University golf team advanced to the first NCAA Championship in program history. It also became the first program in school history to compete for an NCAA National Title. The Eagles head down to The Cardinal Club Simpsonville, Ky. for at least 54 holes of competition against 20 of the top teams in the country beginning on Tuesday, May 15.
 
The top eight teams after 54-holes will be seeded into a bracket and face-off against one other team. Each team match will consist of five points with one point being awarded for each individual match. Winning teams will advance to the semifinals and subsequently the finals. The first team to win three points takes the match and advances.
 
LAST TIME OUT:
Post University advanced to the first NCAA Championship in school history by with a 4th place finish at the NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional at Hershey Country Club on May 9. The Eagles finished the 54-hole event with a score of 942, and were led on by Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Year Anthony Netto (Dusseldorf, Germany) who carded a 77 in the final round. 
 
“Advancing to the national championship has been a long time coming,” eighth-year head coach Pete Stevens said. “The team has worked very hard to get this far, and it was a collective effort and nobody quit. We played through very difficult conditions on a tough course to advance. I'm extremely proud of this group of young men.”
 
Junior Thomas Rees (Cardiff, Wales) was the top finisher for the Eagles. Despite two birdies, he carded an 80 in round three and finished in a tie for 12th with a 231 (76-75-80) overall. Sophomore Ross Earnshaw (York, England) finished tied for 24th with a 235 (77-77-81).
 
Freshman Sebastian Noesgaard (Copenhagen, Denmark) holed two birdies in the third round and shot a 78. Over three rounds he carded a 236 (78-80-78), good for a tie for 26th. Netto finished in a tie for 57th with a 242 (85-80-77). Freshman Anthony McNamara (Beacon Falls, Conn.) shot a 79 on day three, his best round of the tournament. He finished tied for 80th at 249 (90-80-79).
 
POST FRESHMAN CLASS IMPACT:
Golfstat.com has ranked the freshman class impact of the Eagles as 17th in NCAA Division II out of over 200 schools nationwide.
 
The scores for Sebastian Noesgaard (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Anthony McNamara (Beacon Falls, Conn.) were included in the rankings. The two combined to play in 25 rounds this season and post a scoring average of 78.92, which was adjusted to 77.04 for the purpose of the rankings. The Eagles had a relative strength score of 199.247 to place them in 17th overall.
 
Freshman class impact is calculated by taking the adjusted scoring averages of the freshman that have played in the most rounds are compared between all teams throughout the country. That is then factored into each team's adjusted average to come up with a relative strength score out of 1000.
 
SCOUTING THE FIELD:
The Eagles will face some tough competition if they want to bring home the first NCAA Championship in school history as 13 of the top 25 teams in the country make the trip to Simpsonville.
 
The No. 1 team in the county, Barry, is making its fourth straight championship appearance. The Buccaneers won the National Championship in 2007 and finished second in the South/Southeast Regional. No. 2 Nova Southeastern shot an 11-under 277 in the final round of the South/Southeast Regional to come from 15 strokes down to advance.
 
No. 3 California State-Stanislaus is making its 19th championship appearance out of the last 23 years after winning the Central/West Regional. South Carolina-Aiken won three straight NCAA Championships from 2004-2006 and is making its 13 appearance in the championship round.
 
Cameron, Central Missouri, Central Oklahoma, Chico State, Colorado School of Mines, Concord, Cal State-Monterey Bay, Dixie State, Eckerd, Fayetteville State, Ferris State, Georgia College, Georgia Southwestern, Grand Canyon, Indiana (Pa.), Indianapolis, St. Edwards, St. Thomas Aquinas, North Carolina-Pembroke, Washburn, West Liberty, Western Washington, and Wilmington round out the field.
 
Cal State-Monterey Bay, Cameron, Dixie State, Eckerd, Fayetteville State, Ferris State, Georgia Southwestern, and West Liberty will all send individuals to the competition.
 
COURSE INFORMATION:
The Cardinal Club is a par-72, 7,092-yard private club located in Simpsonville, Ky. The course rating is 73.4 and the slope is 134. It opened for play in 2001 and is the home to the University of Louisville golf teams.
