WHITE LAKE, N.C. – The Post University golf team travels to North Carolina for the 12
th Annual Carolina Sands Intercollegiate in its final tune-up before the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship. The tournament will be two rounds with the first teeing off on Saturday, March 31 at Carolina Sands Country Club.
The Eagles are coming off a good showing at the Barton Intercollegiate on March 19-20 where they finished ninth out of 18 teams with a score of 612 (304-308). Three Eagles posted their best rounds of the spring. Junior
Thomas Rees (Cardiff, Wales) shot a two-under 70 in the first round and a 146 for the tournament to finish tied for third. Sophomores
Ross Earnshaw (York, England) and
Anthony Netto (Dusseldorf, Germany) finished tied for 21
st at 148 (75-73) and tied for 40
th at 153 (78-75), respectively. Freshman
Sebastian Noesgaard (Copenhagen, Denmark) carded a 165 (81-84) over both rounds to land in a tie for 72
nd place. Freshman
Jay Gerrick (London, England) finished in 86
th place with a 172 (87-85).
EARNSHAW AND REES LEAD THE WAY:
Rees and Earnshaw have followed up All-CACC team bids in 2011 with strong showings in 2012. Rees has carded the Eagles only round under-par this season with a two-under 70 in the first round at Barton. He has two top-10 finishes, tying for third at the Southern Swing Invitational and ninth at Barton. Earnshaw, the 2011 CACC Rookie of the Year, is tied for the team-lead with Rees with a 74.8 scoring average. He is coming off his best round of the year with a 73 in the final round at Barton. Earnshaw was one of three Eagles that tied for third in the Southern Swing Invitational alongside Rees and senior Marchant de Villiers (Paarl, South Africa).
TOUGH COMPETITION IN CAROLINA:
The Carolina Sands Intercollegiate will feature 15 teams mostly from North and South Carolina. Besides Post, the only school located outside the Carolinas is Young Harris College from Young Harris, Ga. The tournament features one team ranked in the Top 25 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll and four others who are receiving votes. Host UNC-Pembroke is 14
th in the most recent poll, while Barton, Belmont Abbey, Wingate, and Coker all received votes. Catawba, Brevard, Chowan, Louisburg, Wake Tech, Mount Olive, and St. Andrews round out the field.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT:
The teams will play 36 holes on Saturday, March 31 beginning at 8:30 a.m. The final 18 holes will be played on Sunday, April 1 with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
THE ROAD AHEAD:
Post will be back in action on Tuesday, April 10 in the CACC Championship at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette, Pa. The Eagles run of five consecutive CACC Championship titles ended last year as they finished second to Wilmington.
