PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Tries For Second Straight Victory

Eagles Travel To Georgian Court On Saturday Afternoon

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Coming off a thrilling overtime victory on Wednesday night, the Post University women's basketball team travels to take on Central Atlantic Athletic Conference (CACC) rival Georgian Court on Saturday, Feb. 4. Tip-off at the GCU Wellness Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Eagles began the game on a 10-2 run over the first three minutes. Monique Chance (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a jumper at the 12:25 mark to give Post an 18-8 lead, its largest of the game. Dominican (9-9, 9-3 CACC) answered with a 14-3 run of their own to grab a 22-21 advantage with 7:47 remaining in the period, and went into the half ahead 33-30
 
Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) made a jumper at the 10:05 mark in the second to put Post ahead 45-41. The Eagles extended their lead to 58-51 with a Diaysha Brewington (Lynn, Mass.) jumper off a Chargers' turnover with 2:48 remaining. Dominican made three baskets over the final 1:47, including a three-pointer by Lopez with 17 seconds left, to send the game into overtime tied 58-58.
 
Junior Casey Brooks (Highland, N.Y.) nailed a three-pointer at the 2:13 mark of overtime to put the Eagles in front 65-62. Latham would extend the advantage to 67-62 with a layup with 1:33 remaining. Lopez hit another three-pointer with 34 seconds left to pull the Chargers within two at 69-67. Two clutch free throws by Reynolds put Post ahead 71-67. Marley Klunk hit a late three for the Chargers, but it was too late.
 
Senior Kelli Reynolds (Milford, Conn.) led the Eagles with 25 points and made her first five shots of the contest. She finished 10-for-15 from the floor on the night. Post held a 49-35 advantage on the glass and shot 13-for-16 from the free throw line in the victory.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
Since the 2005-06 season the Eagles and Lions have played nine times, with Post winning seven times. The Eagles have won the last two games in the series. In the Eagles home-opener on Nov. 16, 2011, they defeated Georgian Court 93-77. The 93 points scored in that game is the highest total this season for Post.
 
LATHAM LEADS THE WAY:
Junior Aubrey Latham was named Central Atlantic Athletic Conference (CACC) Honorable Mention for the week of Jan. 22-Jan-28. In three games that week she averaged, 20.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per contest. The Eagles went 1-2 during the stretch, with the lone victory coming at Concordia on Jan. 24, 83-74, where Latham tied a season-high with 29 points. She nearly outscored the Clippers with 22 points in the first half to the opponents 23 points. Latham leads the team with 14.3 points per game and 2.2 assists per contest.
 
AMONG THE TOP OF DIVISION II:
Through the games on Jan. 26, the Eagles have two players ranked in the top-40 in three categories in NCAA Division II. Latham currently ranks 39th in free throw percentage. She is shooting 66-for-78 from the line for a percentage of 84.6 percent. Chance ranks 22th in rebounds per game and 34th in blocked shots per game. She averages 10.2 rebounds per contest and has 184 total rebounds. She also has 38 blocks, good for a 2.1 blocks per game average.
 
SCOUTING THE LIONS:
Georgian Court has struggle this season, but has played well as of late, winning two of their last three games. Junior guard Shauneia McPhearson leads the team in scoring with 12.6 points per game. Ebony Sellers ranks 17th in NCAA Division II with 3.1 steals per contest. The Lions lead the CACC with 12.8 steals per game. They draw a lot of fouls, ranking third in the conference with 25.7 free throw attempts per contest.
 
ON THE HORIZON:
The Eagles will be back at home on Tuesday, Feb. 7 to face Concordia for the second time this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Post defeated the Clippers on Jan. 24, 83-74, in Bronxville, N.Y.
