WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women basketball team withstood a strong effort down the stretch by Chestnut Hill on Saturday, Feb. 11 on their way to an 83-77 victory at Drubner. The victory keeps the Eagles Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) playoff hopes alive, as they trail Bloomfield by three games for the final spot with three to play.
Post had their best three-point shooting game of the season, as they went 12-for-23 from distance, led by
Jacquelynne Pugh (Grahamsville, Pa.) and
Raven Wright-James (Middletown, Conn.) with three from long range each.
Early in the first half, turnovers by the Eagles helped Chestnut Hill take a 23-17 lead with 12:00 remaining. Olivia Gorczynski had three from distance in the first to help build the lead for the Griffins, as they extended the advantage to 38-26 with 6:24 left.
Kelli Reynolds (Milford, Conn.) hit a layup with 5:58 remaining to start the comeback for Post. The Eagles closed out the half on a 24-2 run to gain control and head into halftime ahead 50-40. Post hit five three-pointers over the final six minutes, as Wright-James and Pugh both hit two from distance in the stretch. The Eagles shot 9-for-15 from distance in the first half.
Casey Brooks (Highland, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer at the 16:42 mark of the second to give Post their largest lead of the game at 57-42. The Griffins cut the lead to single-digits at 12:21 on an Ashlen Stayrook jumper that made the score 60-52. Pugh nailed her third from distance at 7:28 to put Post ahead 69-58. Chestnut Hill did not go away, closing the game to 77-73 with 36 seconds remaining. Brooks went 5-for-6 from the line over the final seconds to seal the victory.
Reynolds was one of four Eagles in double-digits, finishing with 19 points.
Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.), Brooks, and Wright-James scored 17, 16, and 11 points, respectively.
Monique Chance (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Reynolds each grabbed nine boards. Brooks also finished with six assists.
The Eagles will be back at home on Thursday, Feb. 16 in a pivotal CACC game against Bloomfield. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
