DOMINICAN, N.Y. – Dominican's Marley Klunk hit a three-pointer with four seconds remaining, but it wasn't enough as the Post University women's basketball team pulled out a 71-70 overtime victory at Dominican on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The Eagles (5-14, 3-9 CACC) have now won three straight against the Chargers, including both matchups this season.
Senior
Kelli Reynolds (Milford, Conn.) led the Eagles with 25 points and made her first five shots of the contest. She finished 10-for-15 from the floor on the night.
Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) scored 19 points and pulled down 10 boards, tallying her second double-double of the year.
Monique Chance (Brooklyn, N.Y.) grabbed 16 rebounds in the victory.
The Eagles began the game on a 10-2 run over the first three minutes, Reynolds and Latham each chipped in four points during the stretch. Chance hit a jumper at the 12:25 mark to give Post an 18-8 lead, its largest of the game. Dominican (9-9, 9-3 CACC) answered with a 14-3 run of their own to grab a 22-21 advantage with 7:47 remaining in the period.
Latham broke the Eagles' seven-minute stretch without a field goal with a jumper at 5:36, which gave Post a 25-22 lead. Lindsey Lopez grabbed the lead back for the Chargers at the 4:41 mark as they went into halftime with a 33-30 advantage.
The second period started with the teams trading baskets. Latham made a jumper at the 10:05 mark to put Post ahead 45-41. The Eagles extended their lead to 58-51 with a
Diaysha Brewington (Lynn, Mass.) jumper off a Chargers' turnover with 2:48 remaining. Dominican made three baskets over the final 1:47, including a three-pointer by Lopez with 17 seconds left, to send the game into overtime tied 58-58.
Junior
Casey Brooks (Highland, N.Y.) nailed a three-pointer at the 2:13 mark of overtime to put the Eagles in front 65-62. Latham would extend the advantage to 67-62 with a layup with 1:33 remaining. Lopez hit another three-pointer with 34 seconds left to pull the Chargers within two at 69-67. Two clutch free throws by Reynolds put Post ahead 71-67, before Klunk's late three.
Post held a 49-35 advantage on the glass and shot 13-for-16 from the free throw line in the victory. Dominican, who came into the game seventh in NCAA Division II in three-point shooting, shot just 5-for-19 from distance.
The Eagles hope to continue their winning ways as they travel to Georgian Court on Saturday, Feb. 4. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
