PREVIEW: Eagles Look To Continue Best CACC Start In Program History

The Post University women's basketball team looks to continue its seven-game Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) winning streak with two games against conference opponents this week. The Eagles host Caldwell on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. and travel to Chestnut Hill on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. The squad travels for a non-conference matchup with Molloy on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m. Post is 3-0 in CACC play for the first time in program history.
 
Caldwell (2-8, 1-1 CACC) snapped its eight-game losing streak on Dec. 1 with a home victory over Georgian Court. The Cougars have not won on the road this season. Senior guard Torey Jones leads the CACC with 24 made three-pointers and is second with a 47.1 shooting percentage from distance. She is third in the conference with 17.2 points per game. Caldwell leads the conference with a 37.2 shooting percentage from behind the arc.
 
Molloy (2-2) has won its only two games against CACC opponents this season. The Lions defeated Wilmington 90-72 on Nov. 11 and were victorious over Chestnut Hill on Nov. 16, 83-81. They welcome the Eagles for their home-opener. Molloy has three players that average double-digit points per game led by senior guard Christina Marra with at 13.0. The Lions lead the East Coast Conference (ECC) with 49.0 rebounds per game and 9.2 made three-pointers per game. They are second in the conference with an average of 74.2 points per game.
 
Chestnut Hill (1-6, 0-2 CACC) has dropped its last five contests. Its lone win came in a 60-50 triumph over Lock Haven on Nov. 12. Sophomore guard Olivia Gorczynski is ninth in the CACC with 13.0 points per game and fifth with 13 made from distance on the year. The Griffins grab 27.9 rebounds per game, good for fifth in the conference.

Post staged a 17-0 run over the final 4:49 of the first half to take a 50-30 lead into the break, on their way to an 86-75 victory over Wilmington on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles shared the scoring and had six players in double figures, led by graduate student Monique Chance (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Jessica Webber (Naugatuck, Conn.) with 15 points each. Junior Fernanda Mansilla (Ancud, Chile) dished out a season-high nine assists.
 
Post extended its advantage to as many as 23 in the second half after another Wright-James three-pointer put the Eagles in front 78-55 with 7:27 remaining. The Wildcats slowly chipped away at the deficit with an 18-6 run to get as close as 84-73 with one minute left. The Eagles shot a season-high 41 free throws on the day and made 25 of those attempts.

The Eagles are 2-3 against Chestnut Hill in five all-time meetings, but have won two of the last three matchups. Post fell 55-39 in its only trip to Sorgenti Arena on Jan. 22, 2011.

EAGLES AMONG CACC LEADERS
Post averages 6.8 three-pointers made per game to lead the CACC and is third with a 33.3 shooting percentage from deep. The Eagles have held their opponents to just 60.7 points per contest, good for third in the conference. Fernanda Mansilla leads the conference with 5.5 assists per game. Raven Wright-James is fifth in the CACC with a 43.5 shooting percentage from behind the arc.
 
LIVE BY THE THREE
The Eagles have been knocking down shots from behind the arc all season. In all three victories this season, Post has taken over 20 shots from distance and made at least seven. The Eagles are the top three-point shooting team in the conference at 33.3 percent. Against Wilmington, they made a season-high nine from distance.
 
DISHING OUT THE ASSISTS
Junior Fernanda Mansilla has been putting her teammates in position to score all season. She has 33 total assists on the season and leads the CACC with 5.5 assists per contest. Against Wilmington on Dec. 1, Mansilla dished out nine assists, the highest total by an Eagle since Mallorie Michalak recorded nine against Bridgeport on Nov. 18, 2010.
 
COUNTDOWN TO 1,000 POINTS
Aubrey Latham comes into the week with 856 career points and is just 144 points away from joining the 1,000-point club. She average 14.5 points in four games against the three Eagles' opponents last season.
 
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS
Post was selected to finish fifth in the North Division of the CACC in the preseason poll announced on Nov. 12. The Eagles received 35 total points in the poll. Caldwell garnered 89 points and 11 first place votes and was selected as the North Division favorite. Defending conference champion, Holy Family, earned 95 points and 11 first place votes and was tabbed as the South Division favorite.
 
SCHULER NAMES THE CAPTAINS FOR HIS INAGURAL CAMPAIGN
Post University women's basketball head coach Stephen Schuler named senior guard Casey Brooks (Highland, N.Y.), graduate student Monique Chance (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior guard Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) captains for the 2012-13 season. Brooks is one of the Eagles' top shooters. She led the team and was second in the conference with a 38.9 shooting percentage from behind the arc. Chance was 13th in NCAA Division II with 11.3 rebounds per game and named CACC Honorable Mention in 2011-12. Latham led the Eagles in scoring in 2011-12, averaging 15.5 points per game. She comes into the season just 238 points away from 1,000 for her career.
