WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's basketball team cut a 12-point halftime deficit to as little as three with 18 seconds to play, but the team dropped a 66-62 decision to in-state rival Bridgeport in non-conference action at the Drubner Center on Wednesday afternoon. Junior
Fernanda Mansilla (Ancud, Chile) turned in a team-high 16 points and senior
Casey Brooks (Highland, N.Y.) and junior
Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) chipped in 10 points apiece.
The Eagles pulled to within two points, 64-62, with 18 seconds to play in regulation after Latham hit a pair of free throws. The pair of foul shots capped a 6-1 run over a span of 1:10. However, Vanessa Schindler hit two free throws with 16 seconds remaining to secure the victory for Bridgeport (5-0).
With 7:14 to play in regulation and the Eagles down 57-47, they went on a 10-2 run to pull to within five with 3:33 to go. Mansilla scored the last four points of the spurt and Brooks scored four of the first six for Post (2-3). After the run, which spanned 3:41, the Eagles were down 61-56.
Post trailed 4-3 at the 15:13 mark when Bridgeport went on an 8-0 run to take an 11-3 lead with 10:22 to play in the opening half. Aziza Patterson netted five of the eight Purple Knights' points on the spurt.
However, the Eagles answered with an 8-2 stretch of their own to pull within one, 17-16 with 4:00 to play. Sophomore
Jacquelynne Pugh (Grahamsville, N.Y.) and Mansilla capped the run with three-pointers. Bridgeport grew its lead as large as 12, 30-18, as Marie Biondi hit a baseline jumper after she stole an inbounds pass as time expired in the first half.
For the game, Bridgeport shot 41 percent from the field, but the Eagles held the Purple Knights to just 1-for-8 from beyond the arc. Individually, Patterson led Bridgeport with 26 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field. She added five steals.
Post will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. when it hosts Wilmington in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. The game will be played at the Drubner Center.
