Women’s Basketball Drops Opener To St. Rose In Queens Tournament

Latham Leads The Eagles With 21 Points On The Night

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Post University women's basketball team fell in its season opener on Friday night 53-51 to the College of Saint Rose in the Clarion LaGuardia Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Queens College. Junior Aubrey Latham (Mystic, Conn.) led the Eagles with 21 points and five rebounds on the night.
 
Junior Raven Wright-James (Middletown, Conn.) scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds. Senior Casey Brooks (Highland, N.Y.) made two three-pointers and scored six points on the night. Junior Fernanda Mansilla (Ancud, Chile) led the Eagles with five assists to go along with four rebounds.
 
The Golden Knights opened up an early 15-14 lead at the 12:05 mark of the first half. Jessica Walton scored six points during the stretch. Latham nailed a shot from distance to cap off a 9-3 run by the Eagles to put them ahead 23-18 with 6:47 remaining in the first.
 
St. Rose answered with an 8-0 run to pull ahead 26-23. Wright-James scored a three-pointer at the 2:29 mark of the first half to give Post a 28-26 advantage. The Golden Knights took a 31-30 lead into the break.
 
The Golden Knights stormed out of the intermission on a 9-4 run to pull ahead 40-34 with 12:50 remaining. Freshman Morgan Rams (Hamden, Conn.) made two free throws at the 8:04 mark to give Post its first lead of the second half at 47-46.
 
Latham nailed two free throws with 4:42 remaining to put the Eagles ahead 51-49. St. Rose tied the game up late 51-51 as Gabie Polce hit two from the line with 0:59 left.
 
Out of a timeout, Brooks missed a three and the Golden Knights grabbed the board. With 0:14 remaining, Brittany O'Shea made a layup to give St. Rose a 53-51 advantage. The Eagles missed two shots in their final possession.
 
Post shot 7-for-22 from distance and 8-for-15 from the charity stripe on the night. Polce led St. Rose with 11 points.
 
The Eagles will be back on the court tomorrow afternoon against host Queens College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
