WATERBURY, Conn (April 7, 2011) For the fifth consecutive season Post University heads into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Golf Tournament as the defending champions. Straight off their third consecutive win at Dowling's Peter King Memorial last weekend over ranked opponents, the Eagles have moment on their side.
"Having won the Peter King Memorial Tournament I think we realized that we can beat anyone in our region,” said Pete Stevens, Eagles Head Coach. “The competition will be stiff but that will make us play better. We need two solid rounds of play from everyone both days in order to be successful.”
Stevens has focused his efforts this season on being consistent throughout the lineup and from round to round.
“The stroke disparity must be not more than 3 strokes from the 1 spot in the line-up to the 5 spot in the line-up,” added Stevens. “I thought a conference three-peat was difficult, but a double three-beat is without question the hardest feat we have ever tried to accomplish as a program. If we pull it off, it will truly be a dynasty."
Last season, David McGregor* and then senior Lee Wanklyn went to a sudden death playoff for individual medalist with McGregor coming out on top. McGregor is looking for his fourth straight CACC Tournament Title.
McGregor carded a 137 two years ago (69-68--137) to win the 2009 tournament, and took home the title as a freshman with a 142 (75-67--142) winning the tournament by nine strokes as a rookie.
Post University won last season's tournament at Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield, Conn., by two strokes over Wilmington University. The Eagles finished with a two-day total of (310-305--615), while Wilmington improved by 11 strokes on day two (314-303--617).
In addition to McGregor, sophomore Thomas Rees is back for Post after finishing eighth at last season's tournament, while sophomore Marchant de Villiers tied for 20th. Three-time CACC Rookie of the Week Ross Earnshaw will help Post's cause as well teamed with fellow freshman Oliver Hudak.
As a team, Post University is currently ranked fourth in the East Region and 86th nationally. Challenger Wilmington University is ranked second in the East and 79th nationally.
This year's tournament will be hosted by Chestnut Hill College in Lafayette, PA at the Whitemarsh Valley Country Club.
Teams will play a practice round on Sunday April 10 with two competition rounds scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.
