Eagle Golf Readies for Nationally Ranked Competition at Pizza Inn/Barton Invite

WILSON, NC (March 10, 2011) Post University's golf team is preparing for their third tournament of the spring season at the Pizza Inn/Barton Invitational in Wilson, NC. Last year the Eagles placed 12th in the tournament that boasts nationally ranked programs in Division II golf.

“The outing that we had in the fall at Nova Southeast Tournament (at the PGA Resort in West Palm Beach, FL) and Barton's Fall Tournament shows what this team can do,” said Pete Stevens, Post University Head Golf Coach.

The Eagles defeated No. 18 Midwestern State this fall.

“If we play to that same level as we did this fall, we will certainly do well at the Barton Invite,” added Stevens.

This year's tournament will feature competition against host No. 10 Barton College, No. 29 Queens University of Charleston, No. 56 Pfeiffer, No. 57 Belmont Abbey College, and No. 58 Mount Olive. Post University is ranked 75th in Division II and is one of the top programs in the Northeast.

One area the Eagles are looking to improve upon is consistency from day to day and throughout the lineup. Stevens notes that his goal is to narrow the differences through the entire lineup to only three or four strokes.

Post University is on spring break this week, but the golf program has taken little time away from the focus of fine tuning their skills. After winning the Dowling Spring Invitational last weekend, the Eagles have played four rounds of golf at the Woodland Valley Course in Loris, SC.

The Eagles will make the drive to Wilson, NC at the end of the week to spend some time at the driving range and on the practice greens at the Wilson Country Club Saturday. A practice round is scheduled for Sunday with the tournament being played on Monday and Tuesday.

Eagle freshmen Ross Earnshaw and Oliver Hudak continue to be ranked 20th nationally among freshmen in Division II, a spot they have held since the fall season. Earnshaw was one of only two players to shoot par in the last tournament hosted by Dowling College. The other ended up being the tournament winner as Earnshaw placed third.

At the same event Thomas Rees (79-74—153) came in second only three strokes away from being the tournament medalist. Rees has led the Eagles through two tournaments this season with average round of 79.25 in his sophomore campaign.

Last season at the same Wilson Country Club Course, senior captain David McGregor* (73-80-153) placed 43rd overall. Last season's layout was a 6,851 yard par 72 course.
