Contreras Walks Off Game One, Baseball Splits with Goldey-Beacom on Senior Day

WATERBURY, Conn. – Senior catcher Manny Contreras completed the game one comeback for Post University Baseball against Goldey-Beacom College on a rainy Saturday at Municipal Stadium, as the Eagles picked up a split with the Lightning, who snapped their eight-game losing streak with a 15-2 victory in the seven-inning game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 3, Goldey-Beacom College 2
One inning would produce all the scoring through the first seven innings of the affair as an RBI single from freshman outfielder Kaden Barmer and a sacrifice fly from sophomore infielder Jamie Neris Jr. made up the offense for the Lightning in game one. Freshman right-hander Justin Hascup was impressive otherwise, allowing only those two runs in six innings of work to go along with seven hits, five strikeouts, two walks, and a hit batter.

Senior pitcher Connor Blence was just as dominant in his longest start of the season for Goldey-Beacom, going 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts, two walks, and a hit batter. Graduate outfielder Andrew Hartman delivered the lone run of the first seven innings for the Eagles via his RBI single in the third, before Blence ran into trouble during the eighth before exiting.
After allowing a one-out single to Hartman and getting graduate infielder Hunter Keller to bounce into a fielder's choice with two outs, graduate shortstop Evan Cornwell laid down a bunt, giving junior infielder Jesse Alfalla a chance to bat. Alfalla would deliver the game-tying single, knocking Blence from the game in favor of senior pitcher Kevin Dillon.

While Dillon got out of the eighth, he could not get out of the ninth as a one-out single from sophomore infielder Gill Dolan, followed by a walk to junior outfielder Joey Cohen, gave the bat to Contreras for the game-winning single in a 3-2 victory for Post.

Sophomore right-hander Logan Pulitano picked up his fourth win of the season on the mound for the Eagles, allowing no runs on two hits with four strikeouts in his three innings of work. Pulitano worked out of the seventh in which the Lightning had runners on second and third with nobody out, getting a groundout to Cornwell followed by two strikeouts to keep it at a one-run game, 2-1, at that point.

Game 2: Post University 2, Goldey-Beacom College 15 (7 Innings)
After the Eagles opened up a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind RBI singles from Hartman and Cornwell, the rest of the game would be dominated by the Lightning, who put up 15 unanswered runs against five different Post pitchers to force the split with a 15-2 victory in seven innings. Sophomore pitcher George Starr settled down after his rough first inning to pitch a complete game on 96 pitches while allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and three hit batters as the rain moved in.

Freshman right-hander Jacob Schrage suffered his first collegiate loss on the mound as an Eagle, lasting only 3 2/3 innings in which he allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits with four strikeouts, two walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a balk. Schrage entered the game with a perfect 5-0 record across his nine career starts entering the game.

Across the lineup for the Lightning, three different players would record multi-hit games as the offense had just one extra-base hit off of Post, while sophomore infielder Brent Williams led the way with a 2-for-3 showing, which included four RBIs, three runs scored, and a walk. Freshman infielder Shawn Roy also stole two bases for Goldey-Beacom, who snapped their eight-game losing streak with the win, while also totaling three RBIs.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Evan Cornwell finished today's doubleheader with two hits, moving his career total to 183 hits –  Cornwell is eight hits away from tying Dan Luisi for the most hits in program history at Post University
  • Brent Williams closed with the most runs batted in among all players in the doubleheader, recording four RBIs in game two during his 2-for-3 day with three runs scored
  • The 15 runs scored by Goldey-Beacom College in the second game of the doubleheader were the most the Lightning have scored in the all-time series, with the previous record being 13 runs in back-to-back games on May 4th, 2021
  • With the game two win, Goldey-Beacom College snaps an eight-game losing streak that started back on April 14th against Holy Family University – The Lightning had not won a conference game since April 12th against Dominican (N.Y.)
